It is a technical limitation. We have never assumed that the virtual address space is big enough to hold more than one whole pack mmapped at the same time.
Lifting this needs the piecemeal mmap() change somebody was talking about.
I might bite the bullet and do that myself but I've been hoping to get an appliable patch from somewhere else ;-).
