What about this instead of quoting the argument?
sh -c '$EDITOR "$1" "$2"' editor +5 /path/to/file
(i.e. for C execvp("/bin/sh", "-c", "$EDITOR \"$1\" \"$2\"", "editor",
"+5", "/path/to/file"))
