If git was a little more interactive I'd say prompt the user, problem solved?
$ git checkout next No such branch 'next', do you want to check out a local branch for 'origin/next' instead? [Y/n]
@jay: you assume that if there is more than one matching remote the user is experienced (as they have multiple remotes) enough to know what to do?
