This absolutely must not be timestamp based. If I ask for a list of commits before 2.6.12-rc3 and 2.6.12-rc4 I _really_ want to see those commits which happened before 2.6.12-rc3 but in a remote tree which was only later pulled. That's what 'rev-tree AAAAAA ^BBBBBB' already gives you.
