I forgot to mention this in my reply to the first patch in this series: it strikes me as a mis-characterization that the `apply` backend is about to be retired. What _is_ true is that the `merge` backend is the default backend, and what is even more true is that it is cumbersome if certain `rebase` options cannot be combined because they are only implemented by one of both rebase backends.
