I think you misunderstood.  Failure looks like this:
    check "@@{u}" ref refs/heads/upstream-branch failure
And corresponding success like this:
    check "@@{u}" refs/heads/upstream-branch
We can make the "ref" compulsory if you like.  I thought about it too.
