Sorry, I omitted a step in my report:
 $ make po/gitk.pot
 $ msgmerge -U po/it.po po/gitk.pot ;# and for other languages...
 $ make po/it.msg
Why doesn't gitk ship with pre-generated po/gitk.pot, by the way?
