There are lots of files with Global variables, so your work would most likely not affect others. As a starting point, you might want to look into any file in builtin/. You can also look at previous patches around the same issue for reference. One is this [1].
You can also go through [2] to see previous microprojects done by past
GSoC/Outreachy
interns which might be easier to approach than the above.
