Having re-analysed the codepath like so, I realize that the new variable I introduced was misnamed. Its purpose is to let the "if arg begins with dash, do this" block communicate that what the later part of the code is told to inspect in "arg" may be an option that we do not recognise. So I shouldn't have called it maybe_rev; the message from the former to the latter is "this may be an unknown option" and I should have called it "maybe_unknown_opt".
