Alternatively, you could extend the recent proposal for GIT config "include" statements so that something like this works:
[include]
exec = echo "deploy.prefix = `cat /etc/SERVER_ROLE`"
exec = /usr/local/bin/git-config-for-ldap-userThoughts?
