They are all outputs though; this is an input. I did it that way round so that I could say:
cat .gitmodules <<EOF submodule1 submodule2 EOF
And that was it. Of course, this doesn't work when there are spaces in the filename, so I guess it's got to be
cat .gitmodules <<EOF 000 submodule1 000 submodule2 EOF
I'll wait to see if there are more objections before posting an updated patch.
