Hello Everyone,

I'm working on getting git 1.6.2-rc2 built. I have a bin, man, info, and html directory in my home folder that I'd like to use as the defaults for git. I attempted to do this through

    make configure
    ./configure --XXdir=/full/path/to/dir
    make all man info html
    make install install-man install-info install-html

But other than the binaries (and I'm not even totally convinced they got in correctly) and the man pages, everything else seems to be attempting to go to the typical places in /usr/local.

What am I doing wrong?

The configure support is notoriously incomplete (AFAIK, very few of the active developers use it regularly). Probably you need something like this (but I didn't test it):

diff --git a/config.mak.in b/config.mak.in

Would it be easier for me to just build the documentation and then install it by hand then? Is that even possible?

No, there's Makefile support:
  make htmldir=/path/to/wherever install-html

but the autoconf stuff wasn't hooking into it properly (which is what the patch I sent should do).

What I meant by "incomplete" is that most people just use the Makefile directly without autoconf, so we never notice when bugs like this are hiding. Thus the bugs tend to hang around for a while until somebody submits a patch (which I was hoping you would do after getting it to work).

Did you actually type --XXdir, or is this XX just a way to mean something else? I don't see --XXdir mentionned anywhere.

I use "./configure --prefix=$HOME/some/dir" and it works fine (make install-html installs to $prefix/share/doc/).

Yes, it was just a placeholder. I actually typed things like --htmldir, --mandir, --bindir, etc.

This works for me as well. However, I was hoping for finer tuned control than that through configure. IE ~/bin ~/man ~/info etc.
