Right, so I add the list to CC.
Here are a few question to start the discussion:

What date would be best? Who could come? What needs to be done to organize it? Who could help organize it?

Thanks, Christian.

This reminds me... I'll be offline from 24 or 25 of September for two weeks or so, and need to ask somebody most likely Shawn to keep an eye on the patchflow during that time.

If Git-together happens outside of that, I could join.

This smells like a survey to me. ;-)

We should put together something really short, and try to get folks to answer it, not just from our developer list, but maybe also our user communities. Maybe something like:

1: Are you interested in attending a Gittogether:
		[ ] Yes [ ] No
If you answered no, you can give up on the survey now.
2: Would you travel to Portland, Oregon for the Gittogether:
		[ ] Yes [ ] No
3: What month/year would be best?
Option list for next 12 months from Oct 08-Oct 09.
4: What would you hope to see/accomplish while there?
		[ ] Instructor-lead Git training
		[ ] 24 hour hack-a-new-feature contest
		[ ] ... ?
		Enter other ideas: [ <big text box thingy> ]
5: Would you volunteer to help organize it?

Trick question. Email blah@blah to indicate how you can help.

Enjoy your time away from the keyboard. I'd be happy to keep a patch queue for you to pick up from when you get back.

I think it would be after that. I doubt we could put it together with <30 days of notice. Most people who would want to attend need to book travel arrangements. While its possible with 30 days notice you can typically get better rates if you have more lead time.

Also, if this event would indeed be in US, some of the developers would need to arrange visa, which takes time too (though the time can vary, reportedly - but 30 days should be enough).

I'm slightly discouraged by the idea of getting the visa, which is reportedly exhausting process involving handing over huge amount of personal information to US government etc. But I might wind up having to travel to US sooner or later anyway, so I guess it's not a deal-breaker for me.

(Then again, after a moment of thought, I'm not sure about the actual scale of the event - if it's just a short thing for a day or two, a trip from Europe probably does not make much sense. But if we could think up enough for four days of fun, it would be probably worth it.)

Didn't Johannes mention that he will be in US in October?

Very good point. I myself am trying to justify flying to Eclipse
Summit Europe in November. Its a long flight from the west coast
of the US.

> Didn't Johannes mention that he will be in US in October?

He sometimes makes trips to DC for some reason or another. But maybe October he was thinking of the GSoC mentor summit? Its held here in Mountain View, CA. Not too far from Portland, relatively speaking. But if he's here in October I'm not sure he'd want to be here again in say November. Not enough time between flights to stretch the legs out again. ;-)

I'm not sure where you're from, but quite a few countries who are
members of the european union are also member of the visa waiver
program and don't need visas to visit the us unless they:
* have been suspected of a crime in the past 10 years (not only
  convicted, suspected is enough)
* are first-generation immigrants
* could in some really, really far-fetched way be suspected to be
related to be connected to one of the several hundred thousand
  terrorist organizations around the world

Check with your american embassy. They're quite friendly, provided you don't call them before american business hours have started. I believe it's something of a conundrum in china and australia, but perhaps the embassies there make special arrangements.

Ah, I somehow got a wrong impression about this event from the initial posting, and certainly didn't imagine you were planning a mini-conference like one, but a much more informal and smaller "while some of us are in the west coast during/near GSoC mentor thing, how about getting together for fun" kind of settings.

It all makes sense now.

Well, we could do that too. But I think we'd want to maybe do that closer to Mountain View, where the actual summit is taking place, to cut down on the amount of travelling that the out-of-town folks have to do.

E.g. you could come up this year, and we'll have maybe 3 or 4 of our mentors here for the summit. We could even do a mini-one day thing at the Google campus. I could probably get Google to give us a small conference room or tech talk room for half a day or something.

I don't really know what our community is interested in doing. So I'm just tossing out ideas and seeing what sticks. If we don't do anything, that's fine too.

I think it needs to be at least 2 days long for people coming from Europe or farther, otherwise it might not be worth it for them to come. Or it needs to happen during, after or before another interesting conference.

The Google Mentor Summit is in Mountain View:
- October 25(Sat)-26(Sun)
Maybe we can have the GitTogether also in Montain View just after that:
- October 27(Mon)-28(Tue)

so that the 3 mentors that come to the mentor summit just have to stay to 2 more days there.

Or maybe we can just plan something for next year.

Thanks, Christian.

Re: Gittogether event?

I know I haven't chimed in yet - As for the mentor summit itself I wouldn't mind attending, but if there are others who would like to go I won't begrudge them attending. That also said I live in the Bay area, and while I think I'll change apartments at some point, if people want to crash at my place I've got an air mattress and futon people are more than welcome to occupy.

Hmm. Not only that, but a number of our users come out to the Mentor Summit. ~170 open souce projects send folks to that summit, and a fair percentage of those are now in Git. Many who travel far for the summit already plan to stay a few days if they can.

Thanks, and thanks again for handling the patchflow last year around the same time. I'll be away for a reason related to the last year's event, but at least this year it is scheduled so I can plan ahead.

Yes or to San Fransisco. I will probably stay 3 or 4 days even if I don't attend any other conference/event. Any free accomodation would be greatly appreciated.

(Flight costs from Paris France are about 550 EUR (825 US$) for Portland Oregon around the 20th of September and 630-670 EUR (950-1000 US$) for San Fransisco around the 27th of October. Flights takes between 13 and 23 hours each as they are not direct.)

Oct 08 is ok. After that I would prefer between May 09 and Oct 09. Anyway not Nov 08 or Dec 08.

I'd like small sessions (half a day/night long) that go like this:
- 1 hour long presentation and discussion: someone talks about a topic and
some problems about it, then we discuss what could be done about this topic
- a few hours long hacking: we try to implement solutions for problems
related to the previous discussion.
But I guess anything will do.

Yes. Though I am probably not in the best place to help. But I can start to gather some information on a web page on the wiki or something.

Yikes. Anyway, if we have it in Moutain View after the GSoC mentor
summit I can probably offer up a couch and some floor space to a
couple of folks. Hopefully by then I will have the huge stacks
of boxes put somewhere and there will actually be some space for
people in my flat. As it stands there is very little space for
myself and my wife.

That's what I'm starting to think. We either hold it after the GSoC
mentor summit in Mountain View, or we defer until some time in 2009,
where we actually have time to put something together.

This is called a hackathon, and I had the pleasure of attending three of them. It is an extremely productive time, although you have to prepare to fall into a black hole after them, when all the fun suddenly stops.

As for dates: I am pretty free. However, I kind of hoped to pre-/append it to the GSoC summit, since I cannot afford to pay the flight, but I could afford to pay the difference to wherever else than Mountain View the Gitogether would take place.

All this, of course, provided that Google invites us, and that I am actually one of the few lucky mentors being allowed to come.

Ciao, Dscho

I think that if it's just after/before the Mentor Summit it makes no sense for it to be outside Mountain View. As Shawn said there are many git users that will be there for the summit, so we want to make it easy for them to attend the GitTogether.

I don't think I deserve/want to go to the Google SoC Mentor Summit but I would apprieciate if some of the mentor money could fund some of my travel expenses.

By the way I created this page on the wiki:
http://git.or.cz/gitwiki/GitTogether
If someone see things to add, please do so.

Thanks, Christian.

Figure I may as well answer this, given it's addressed to me :)

Sure, but only if several people thought it would be worth blowing US $1400 of community funds on my ticket ... that's what it costs to get across the Pacific!

The summit time is actually quite good for me.

The main reason I'd be interested in joining would be to talk to people about the gittorrent project, or any other similar "cloud computing" over git ideas. There was a bit of difference of opinions, and some divergence of ideas that was possibly avoidable. It would be good to "crack out" the concepts with a group of people "in person". I'm pretty sure there's already a videoconference setup at Catalyst, or if not there could be one jimmied up easily enough. So that might be a nice cheap thing to do - I can give a 30 minute overview of the technology, and hopefully participate in group discussion for another 30 minutes (or as long as people are interested in the discussion really).

Of course I'd equally like to meet people... that's all good and fun :-). And I've got connections in Portland as well. I just think it's probably not the best use of community funds.

> 5: Would you volunteer to help organize it?

I'd volunteer for anything, but you'd better turn it down I'd be hopeless ;-).

Yes, thank you very much for your answer :-) By the way David and Daniel, are you interested by a GitTogether or by the GSoC Summit?

From below in your email it seems you mean video conference. Are there other people interested by an event via video conference?

Maybe you can go to the GCoC Mentor Summit and Google will pay your ticket? Are you interested in going to the Mentor Summit?

Thanks anyway ;-) Christian.

I'm not really; I don't like to travel and I'm pretty busy these days.

Well, IME this only really works for a limited number of people attending via a video link.

Sure, I'd love to go, it's well timed between my terms and I haven't been to SFO yet. It's just a lot of money, and imagine all the trees I'll have to plant to offset the carbon emissions :-)

No, you just need to get Git Torrent implemented! In the long run it will save tons of carbon emissions :-)

It could be done as part of the Linux Plumbers Conference this September
in Portland where there will be at least one git talk:

(You mean the Git Tutorial by Linus:

http://linuxplumbersconf.org/program/speakers/getspeaker.php?speaker=ltorvalds.txt)
So yes it could be part of the Plumbers Conference or just after it.

If it's part of the Conference, I wonder if people only interested by the GitTogether will have to pay the Conference registration fee (300$)?

In Portland, OR there will be:
- September 15(Mon)-16(Tue): Kernel Summit 2008
(https://www.linuxfoundation.org/events/kernel)
- September 17(Wed)-19(Fry): Linux Plumbers Conference
(http://linuxplumbersconf.org/)
So the GitTogether could perhaps be just after that:
- September 20(Sat)-21(Sun): GitTogether

as some people might just want to come during a weekend and other might want to come for 5 days or even one full week (if they are invited to the Kernel Summit)?

The main problem is that it's a bit late for this year.

Thanks, Christian.

Oy, yes, thanks, that is what I meant to write, but utterly failed to convey.
