If only Git had a structured error type, than we wouldn't have to have such ugly workarounds. Anyway, this is a deeper issue and nothing we can blame on this patch series.

Also, we cannot just return the equivalent of `return error("msg")`, as we do want to use and munge the error message as part of the status report we send to the client.
