That's only true for a plain "git status" (and even there it does *one* superfluous lstat()).

If you do "git status ." it still does a _lot_ of unnecessary commits.

This patch will help. It removes the one superfluous lstat() from "git status", and for "git status ." it removes two of them. Basically the old pattern

	if (file_exists(..))
		add_file_to_cache(..)
now uses just one lstat() and shares the data between the two.
