bash prompt evaporates in subdirectories

What did you do before the bug happened? (Steps to reproduce your issue) cd subdirectory/

What did you expect to happen? (Expected behavior) bash prompt would be still active and showing the status of my checkout (possibly even limited to the current subdirectory, but it is not necessary)

What happened instead? (Actual behavior) Part of the bash prompt related to git (e.g., current branch) evaporates

What's different between what you expected and what actually happened? I would like to have current branch and status even in subdirectories
