The message shows up when multiple refspecs/branches are passed, like
$ git fetch --set-upstream origin master next From https://github.com/git/git * branch master -> FETCH_HEAD * branch next -> FETCH_HEAD warning: multiple branch detected, incompatible with --set-upstream
