OK. I'll put together a new, complete patch series implementing my best attempt at all of this.

I'll make each commit address an actual bug in git as much as possible.

For example, I suspect that "git am" is still passing a bare email to mailsplit which can cause broken splitting for a message with a "From ... timestamp" line it. My current series doesn't test that, (nor try to fix it), but that's all in the same family of bugs here.
