On GNU bash, version 4.1.2(2)-release (x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu) this emits:

./t5318-commit-graph.sh: line 285: 8 +                      1 \* 12: syntax error: invalid arithmetic operator (error token is "\* 12")

The same goes for the rest of this "\*" within $((...)) in this file, it should just be "*"..
