Could it be that there is a mode in svn checkout that allows pristine to be hardlinked to the working tree copies? It requires an editor that can be told to break hardlinks when making modifications (and the user obviously needs to know about it), but to save 1.5G it is worth it and if _I_ were hacking on SVN that would be an obvious optimization to add.
