Before "git-repack -a" was invented, I used to do this by hand:
	$ mkdir ./++preserve
        $ mv .git/objects/pack/pack-*.pack ./++preserve
        $ for p in ./++preserve/pack-*.pack
          do git-unpack-objects <$p; done
