Using --untracked-files=no cuts the time to display the editor from down to 12 seconds, so that is perfectly fine. The patch can be ignored. However, would config option to change the default --untracked-files value be entertained? Allowing:

[commit]
	untrackedfiles=no
which defaults (as stated in the documentation for --untracked-files) to all?
