In addition to what others have said, I would recommend to start with "The Git Parable" [1] - which is an ideal gentle, non-technical introduction to the concept of distributed version control systems, - and then read "Git from the Bottom Up" [2] and "Git for Computer Scientists" which has already been mentioned.
