Should there be some minor infrastructure in the Makefile so you can do:
make DEFAULT_HELP_FORMAT=man
rather than:
make CFLAGS='-DDEFAULT_HELP_FORMAT=\"man\"'
(and the Makefile would be a good place to advertise this build knob, too)?
