[PATCH v3 0/9] more changes to port rebase -i to C using sequencer code

This is another reroll of the series I first sent on August the 12th.

The only changes since v2 are in the commit messages. References to the pick() function have been replaced by references to pick_commit(), and I tried to describe the purpose of the patch first.
