Here's a terrible way to do this:
$ GIT_EDITOR=: git commit -a -m 'throwaway' >/dev/null $ (git ls-tree -r HEAD; git ls-tree -r HEAD~1) \ | sort | uniq -d | sed -e 's/^[^ ]* [^ ]* [^\t]*\t//' $ git reset HEAD~1 >/dev/null
