That's correct. But the git commit/tree/blob objects are a mere cache. For example, a refresh consists of:

git-update-index ... git-diff HEAD^ > patchfile git-reset --hard HEAD^ <internal push patch function - uses git-apply, git-{write,commit}-tree>
