I'm willing to do that - but I still don't get what I actually type.
I just tried:
mkdir linux
cd linux
git init git addremote linus rsync://rsync.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git

I issued a 'git --help' command (yeah - git is different - should be 'git help') but I don't see any command that looks like it would checkout the working files.
