What I had in mind when I mentioned !(...) were some half-formed ideas about shortcuts for manipulating the environment, !(nopager), for example.
But these ideas were vague and I can't think of any off-hand which I would use other than !(cwd). I'd say !(root:path/to/dir), but that's obviously not necessary (any more than !(root) would be, if cwd were the default), and honestly I'm quite happy using shell functions for that sort of thing.
