Hi all,

Excuse my curiosity. I'm not sure if there has been discussion about Git's participation in GSoC 2021 but my search in the archives didn't get me anything. The deadline for Org application seems to be around the corner (this Friday, Feb 19th at 1900 UTC).

So, I was curious to know if we've already applied to participate in GSoC 2021 (or) if we're planning to participate?

In case we're participating we'll need ideas that fit the new structure of GSoC 2021. Concise entry about the new structure from Rev News 68 [1]:

Google Summer of Code 2021 has been announced with significant
changes compared to previous editions. Notably coding hours and
period will be reduced from 350 hours and 12 weeks to 175 hours
and 10 weeks; there would be 2 evaluations (instead of 3).
Additionally, eligibility requirements will be relaxed, among
others allowing people participating in a variety of different
licensed academic programs, not just students of accredited
  university programs.
See the related blog [2] for detailed information.

Speaking of GSoC, unlike last year I'll not be able to actively co-mentor this year due to certain circumstances in my family. I'll be able to help passively, though.

Also, one thing about project ideas. Shourya Shukla who worked last year on the builtin conversion of `git submodule` (currently stalled [3]) has told me privately that he isn't interested in continuing the port further. So, finishing the port of `git submodule` could be a nice project for GSoC 2021. I believe it would fit the new GSoC structure but I might be wrong.

Hi all, I am a Sophomore student, I am also very concerned about this issue. Has git applied for GSOC this year? I love open source and hope to have the opportunity to participate in git GSOC this year.

Yeah, sorry for not discussing that before, and thanks for starting the discussion.

I don't think we have applied yet, but I would be ok to apply. I think I will do it soon unless people objects.

I have just created an Idea page with 2 project ideas:
https://git.github.io/SoC-2021-Ideas/
Other ideas are very welcome.

Ok, thanks for helping passively!

Yeah, I agree. In the ideas list Shourya is mentioned as a possible (co-)mentor to a project to finish the builtin conversion of `git submodule`, as he told me that he could be ok with co-mentoring on this.

Best, Christian.

I just saw the "Use ref-filter formats in `git cat-file`" in the ideas list. I would love to co-mentor this one, if possible.

Thank, Hariom.

Yeah, great! I just added you as a "possible mentor" on the page.

Thanks, Christian.

Awesome, Thanks.

I noticed some text is missing in the project description in SOC-2021-ideas page. I guess it's due to the angle brackets. I created a [PR](https://github.com/git/git.github.io/pull/478) for that. Please take a look.

Thanks, Hariom.

Hi,Hariom verma, I am very glad that you can serve as a possible mentor for GSOC this year! I am very interested in this "Use ref-filter formats in `git cat-file`". Where should I start learning? :) Hariom verma <hariom18599@gmail.com> 于2021年2月19日周五 下午2:05写道:

Yeah, possible co-mentor. Thanks :)

That's great. Maybe you can start by learning:
- What is cat-file?
- How cat-file works?
- What is ref-filter?
- How ref-filter works?
- What logic previous students came up with to unify these?
- How much work has been done?
Note: here at Git, we usually prefer inline replies. So, please avoid
top posting.

Thank you for your guidance, I will try to see the relevant code implementation and documentation.

So I just filled up the forms to apply. The information I used is in:
https://git.github.io/SoC-2021-Org-Application/

I also registered myself as an org admin. The only issue left is that we need another org admin, so I invited Peff and Kaartic. (You should have received an email.) I hope at least one of you will accept, otherwise please tell us soon.

If someone also wants to be an org admin, please say so. It doesn't require much work if any.

Best, Christian.

Great! Thanks! It looks like Peff also accepted the invite, so we are all set now.
