Hey there! I am a shell script and Linux kernel programmer and looking forward to making contributions to Git. May you please help me out with some getting started links. I would be very thankful to you if you could help me out with that.

This recent thread on the git-users mailing list [1] should have you covered on this topic.

To maybe add to what's written there, I'd also suggest looking under the "Documentation" directory of your local Git clone [2] - as it contains all the relevant material.

You might want to start with the MyFirstContribution[1] and SubmittingPatches[2] doc files (they are also available at the 'Documentation/' dir of the Git repository).

Also, I wrote a "first steps" guide, which is available at [3]. I hope you may find it helpful :)

Hey Manav,

I am a new contributer to Git as well. In addition to what Konstantin and Matheus said, I would like to add on that you can try improving some test files[1]. They are relatively easier to change and will give you a good idea of shell scripts as well. This is what I did as my first contribution[2]. Also, I think you know by now that we contribute via Patches by providing our "diffs" (wrt the initial code we changed) and mail it here to be reviewed by the maintainers and experienced personnel. I request you not to make any PRs as it won't bear any fruit.

If you need any help, you can contact anyone here. We are a friendly community :)
