* The 'master' branch has these since the last announcement.
I've merged too many stuff since 1.4.2-rc2, so there will be
1.4.2-rc3 tonight and hopefully things can be stabilized to
  tag 1.4.2 over the weekend.
  - autoconf stuff by Jakub Narebski
  - portability to GNU/kFreeBSD by Gerrit Pape
  - various cleanups and fixes by Johannes
  - built-in git-mv by Johannes
  - git-apply -R by Johannes
  - setup_git_directory cleanups by Linus
  - gitweb clean-ups and blame improvements by Luben Tuikov
  - commit walker updates by Pasky
  - rebase tweaks by Robert Shearman
  - more tests and documentation updates
* The 'next' branch, in addition, has these.
  - Git.pm by Pasky with help from Pavel Roskin and others.
I'd like to merge this immediately after 1.4.2, unless there
still are concerns about its portability (in which case
please help fixing them up before this hits the "master"
    branch).
  - many gitweb cleanups by Jakub Narebski, Martin Waitz and
    Matthias Lederhofer.
I think these are low-impact and generally good changes.
  - "merge-recur" by Johannes and Alex with help from others.
I still see a few TODO here and there in the code, but it
appears that this operates correctly (I've been using this
for real work for some time). Do we have benchmarks?
* The 'pu' branch, in addition, has these.
   Johannes Schindelin:
Add the --color-words option to the diff options family
   Junio C Hamano:
      upload-pack: minor clean-up in multi-ack logic
upload-pack: stop the other side when they have more roots than we do.
      read-tree --rename and merge-rename

Although I am admittedly not a big fan of this dependency (it is one thing to depend on perl, but another to depend on compiling C modules for perl), I have to say that on all machines I tested, it works fine now. The only platform I did not test is IRIX, and I'll do that on Friday.

As for the TODOs: they are strictly non-functional. But I think we can squash the remaining three until Monday.

As for benchmarks, Alex has a very nasty test-case, where the Python script takes ages: 10 minutes as compared to just over 2 minutes with our recursive merge.

Unfortunately, resolve beats that easily with less than 3 seconds ;-)

BTW I realized it is not really colouring words, since I erroneously selected word boundaries at whitespace. But if the only reaction to this is your "soooooooo strange", I guess you'll drop it...

Do you have any numbers on that? I could imagine that merge-recursive could be rewritten as a shell script using this and git-merge-base...

Ciao, Dscho

Perhaps, I dunno.

I think "read-tree --rename" is now becoming into a debuggable shape.

One bad thing about it is that merge-rename uses the usual merge-one-file, and it loses a rename merge conflict because of that. When our branch renames A to B while their branch renames A to C, "read-tree --rename" notices it and leaves A, B, and C in stage #1, #2, and #3, but merge-one-file resolves these paths following the usual 3-way merge rules, resulting A to be removed and both B and C created.

Completely broken on ActiveState Perl and cygwin. Generated Makefile contains pathnames with backslashes and the whole file has CRLF line endings.

Anything constructive other than "doctor it hurts when I use activestate", so you can help improve things to be more ActiveState friendly?

What's the standard workflow/procedure ActiveState users would use to build and install .xs extensions? Maybe they have their own $(MAKE) equivalent that groks such a Makefile with backslashed pathnames and CRLF endings?

Nothing. If I had something, I'd post it.

I don't know. It's a bit more than backslashes and CRLF. The pathnames must be _completely_ converted from windows to cygwin. Cygwin even provides an utility for that (cygpath). Besides, there still is that stupid case-sensitivity problem.

What I meant to say was that the real mistake might be for us to try using the Cygwin toolchain (GNU make, gcc and GNU C library) while working with ActiveState.

Now, I admit I know very little about ActiveState and know nothing about Windows build environment, but I would not be surprised if in ActiveState land there were a MakeMaker equivalent that spits out Makefile equivalent that is suitable for MS development environment, and the users are expected to work in that environment, perhaps using MS C compiler toolchain, to produce object files if they want to link with ActiveState stuff. If that were the case, maybe what is needed is to port the build infrastructure to MS development environment, and making Makefile generated from perl/Makefile.PL usable might not be of much use.

Luckily, only ActiveState Perl users are hit. Which, I suppose, is not all that much (it's really crappy environment to work in, an only real stupid corporate users can keep doing that), and they're used to pain.

AFAICS, it is not suitable for anything: generated Makefile is not parsable by nmake(what MS thinks is a make) and is more like a broken gmake Makefile. Also -fno-strict-aliasing points at gcc.

I'd suggest to add NO_PERL_XS option to the top-level Makefile. Really core tools do not need Git.pm.

I think I better post what I have got from MakeMaker. Just keep in mind: it's CRLF delimited.

# This Makefile is for the Git extension to perl. # # It was generated automatically by MakeMaker version # 6.17 (Revision: 1.133) from the contents of # Makefile.PL. Any plans on a fix for: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=git&m=115089393505286&w=2

I use gitk a lot, but having to nuke ~/.gitk every time I launch it is a bit annoying. :-)

Commenting out the line mentioned in the reply lets me resize the window and see the bottom panel properly -- but I do have to resize it every time so it doesn't extend past the bottom of the screen.

FYI, if it's not easy to reproduct, I'm running it on Debian/stable systems, i386 and x86_64, both with backports.org X servers, using tcl/tk 8.4

Unfortunately, plan needs to be drawn by somebody who sees breakage.

I am running Debian/testing+unstable on i386 and x86_64 with tcl8.4 (8.4.12-1.1) and tk8.4 (8.4.12-1), displaying on xserver-xorg (1:7.0.22). I cannot get gitk to misbehave the way the quoted post describes. Even after resizing it to so short that the bottom search input and commitdiff area becomes invisible, moving the middle separator around gives the lower panes back, and both of the scrollbars on the lower panes seem to be behaving during that exercise.

The "workaround" to disable ".ctop conf" feels actively wrong; this makes the command forget the dimension from the last session, which is not so different from removing ~/.gitk every time.

Could this be some funny interaction between window manager and gitk perhaps? I think my machines run metacity and the environment is minimally Gnome.

Broken for me also:

	Ubuntu Hoary
	Ubuntu Breezy
No Gnome(s) here.

I'm willing to help out with anything needed, but I haven't touched TCL in a very long time -- and never used Tk.

I'm using Enlightenment from the Debian repo: barbeque/zarathustra:barbeque: eesh -ewait 'version' Enlightenment Version : enlightenment-0.16.7.2 code is current to : $Date: 2004/12/14 22:00:25 $

barbeque/zarathustra:barbeque: dpkg -l xserver-xorg|tail -1 ii xserver-xorg 6.9.0.dfsg.1-3 the X.Org X server

I'll start experimenting with other window managers and see what I turn up.

Re: What's in git.git

Looks like it's not window-manager specific.
rm'd ~/.gitk, then launched it twice -- it showed up on:

If anyone has ideas or requests for more info, let me know.

Re: What's in git.git

Wheee...
Found it.

Not sure what the "right" way to do this is... generated it with "git format-patch FETCH_HEAD.." on the master branch, and dropped it inline to the mail.

Um.... patch included because it's so trivial anyone could have fixed it, but what's the "proper" way to submit patches?

Not doing so causes subsequent launches of gitk to "lose" the bottom bits of the window.

Of course, and the patch gets munched. Re-trying as an attachment. :(

Are you sure about this?
	* $texth is not global, and set geometry(ctexth)
expression has a syntax error (the slash at the end of
the line should be backslash for continuation) -- I do
not see how this could have worked.
	* you are setting geometry(ctexth) but trying to write
out $wid (which is geometry(ctextw) for the next
          round).
	* but because of the first problem, I suspect the entire
catch {} clause would have silently failed, perhaps
leaving the old ~/.gitk around, or more likely not
creating ~/.gitk at all, which essentially is
"removing ~/.gitk every time you run it" ;-).

Did your ~/.gitk change after exiting your gitk session? I somehow doubt it.

The following _might_ have a better chance of success...

Whups -- you're right. It wasn't creating ~/.gitk at all, so it was in as you said -- just like rm'ing it every time.

I tried your patch, and I still get the same result, though it creates a ~/.gitk. "set geometry(ctexth)" appears in the ~/.gitk file properly now, though.

I'll keep digging, and sorry for the noise.

Re: What's in git.git

Okay, dug around a bit more, and I admit, I'm not very familiar with Tk (just started reading about it when poking at the gitk weirdness).

After applying your patch, rm'ing ~/.gitk, *and* doing:

--- gitk 2006-08-03 02:27:20.000000000 -0700 +++ /home/barbeque/bin/gitk 2006-08-03 02:24:52.000000000 -0700

                                    [font metrics $textfont -linespace]}]
     }

Then subsequent launches of gitk appear to be correct. However, if the stale
~/.gitk is still around, the bug stays around.

Since my eyes are getting fuzzy, can someone that knows TCL/Tk eyeball that
and see if it's the actual cause, or just papering over a bug?

Thanks!

Doesn't clobber ~/.gitk, but doesn't correct error either (i.e. I still cannot see bottommost part of gitk window in subsequent invocations).
