gitk takes a looong time for a subdir of the Gentoo repository

steps to reproduce:

$> git clone git://git.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git $> cd gentoo $> gitk sys-apps/portage-mgorny

For few minutes I do just read here : "Reading commits..."
