I'm trying to make git for myself, but can't seem to get https working. This is what I did to make it:

In a new shell

Cloning into 'git'... fatal: Unable to find remote helper for 'https'

But my machine does have curl, and that curl can access https urls

Thanks, Nate

What does it say when configuring libcurl? Are there any errors? What if you use the Makefile directly (it's our main build method)?

Have you also installed libcurl-devel (or whatever the package might be called, but it seems you are also using opensuse)?

This is the problem, thanks. I only have curl and libcurl4 installed, and I was hoping to not install any new packages. So I downloaded curl and openssl and tried to make those. I was able to build openssl, but I was not able to build curl off of that (skipping curl's ./configure step doesn't seem like an option).

This isn't curl's mailing list, so if you don't want to help me make curl, I understand (and have a workaround that might end up being a better solution for what I'm trying to do anyways)

Which is to say, you either have a totally crazy aversion against installing (headers-only, no less) packages, or you have a hidden reason why you don't want to do that and you're not telling us.

Meh.

I wonder if omitting the whole "configure" thing (remove config.mak.autogen) and doing

    $ make
    $ make install
may work for you better?
