Hmm. Without mkdtemp(), maybe you could just do a trivial compat function 
somethin glike

	char *git_mkdtemp(char *template)
	{
		char *n = mktemp(template);
		if (mkdir(n))
			n = NULL;
		return n;
	}

instead?
