Use '--' to separate paths from revisions, like this: 'git [...] -- [...]' $ git symbolic-ref --short HEAD notyet Are you trying to say that the result of 'rev-parse --abbrev-ref HEAD' is suboptimal and that of 'symbolic-ref --short HEAD' is OK? -- Hannes
