Once upon a time, not setting ASCIIDOC_NO_ROFF was required for sane output. At the time those knobs came into being, the defaults were set for then-current versions of the software. I suspect ASCIIDOC8 and ASCIIDOC_NO_ROFF should be the default these days. -Peff
