It seems the windows port somewhat has the status \"we want it but\nI'm not going to do it\" for most git contributors.\n\nI'm personnally using unix 99% of the time, but I also have a piece of\nwindows installed on my laptop. For example, I'm working on a small\nproject using windows-only software, and being able to use git\ncomfortably from this setup would be cool.\n\nAlso, I'm relucant to migrate to git completely even for unix-only\nprojects, since I know that a hypothetical future windows-port will be\nmade hard by the non-availability of the windows port.\n\n> Given that the best thing for git in the long term is more users, \n\nThat's what I feel. The problem with distributed SCMs at the moment is\nthat there are too many of them, not sharing enough users. For\nexample, I had to choose a replacement for CVS with some colleagues\nrecently. I argued about using a distributed one, but the argument\nagainst, and the decision was \"SVN is what they're more likely to use\nlater, let's go for SVN no matter how bad it is\".\n\n> and that no windows support is the commonly given reason why other\n> SCMs are chosen instead, this would be a good use of the resources.\n\nSure. One of the best examples being Mozilla. I hardly see them using\na piece of software that's not working properly on windows, since the\nmajority of users (and probably of the developers, I don't know) are\nrunning windows.\n\n-- \nMatthieu\n"},{"id":"35791","messageId":"000601c75b1b$cbc0e710$0b0aa8c0@abf.local","threadId":"6946","inReplyTo":"20070225075917.GC1676@spearce.org","subject":"RE: Google Summer of Code 2007","fromName":"Raimund Bauer","fromEmail":"ray@softwarelandschaft.com","sentAt":"2007-02-28T09:35:34Z","receivedAt":"2007-02-28T09:35:34Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"ray@softwarelandschaft.com","avatar":null},"body":"On Sun, 25 Feb 2007, Shawn O. This includes:\n * much talked on (and even with two different independent\n implementations) _subproject (submodule) support_, which would\n certainly help using git for large modular projects like KDE,\n Mozilla or distributions.\n * lightweight checkout aka. .gitlink idea, to have file which\n would point to object directory, refs directory, index file\n and current branch file. It could help submodule support.\n * partial/sparse checkouts, where you can checkout for example\n only Documentation directory, work on it, but commit full tree.\n Sometimes it better suits than using submodules\n * gitweb caching and other gitweb improvements: bringing together\n all gitweb implementations. Perhaps gitweb maintainer could\n come of it. Or at least gitweb admin for kernel.org\n * builtinification and libification\n * lazy clone aka remote alternates, if it can be done at all...\n \n> Google's FAQ has a lot of details, but the important part which\n> lists what should be included in an application can be found here:\n> \n> http://code.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=60303&topic=10727\n> \n> I don't know how the great SoC filter works for organizations,\n> but last year's list (found at http://code.google.com/soc/) has a\n> number of projects listed on it that are actively using Git for their\n> version control.
