I would suggest trying\nto report this on the Git for Windows issue tracker at\nhttps://github.com/git-for-windows/git/issues.\n\nA brief search shows that there are some issues there with this error\nmessage. For instance, if you're operating on a CIFS/SMB share (that\nis, those with the `\\\\share\\` syntax), there's a known issue about that.\nIt's also known that you should not put your Git repositories in a\nfolder that's special to Windows, such as Documents, because Windows\nimposes additional restrictions on those paths in ways that can break\nGit (this is also true of macOS).\n\nSimilarly, you absolutely should not place repositories in a directory\nmanaged by OneDrive, Dropbox, or a similar syncing service, since they\noften don't work and even when they do, these services can cause\ncorruption to repositories. If it's not a regular folder on a regular\nNTFS disk, you might try using a regular NTFS disk (such as C) to try to\nsee if it makes a difference.\n\nIf you do report it to the Git for Windows tracker, please search for\nboth open and closed issues and mention anything that is special about\nyour repositories and where you're storing them. Is it a network drive\nor folder? What kind? Is it a drive other than C? What storage is it\non? What file system is it using? These kinds of answers will help the\nmaintainer determine the relevant difference about what's not working\nand fix it. I feel very confident that the Git for Windows maintainer\nwould not have released totally broken software, since they are\nthoughtful and diligent, so there's some specific reason it's not\nworking for you while it is working for others.\n\nBest of luck in solving your issue.\n-- \nbrian m. carlson (they/them)\nToronto, Ontario, CA\n"},{"id":"522421","messageId":"865894a2-ed71-5a03-a708-585cbb591ce7@gmx.de","threadId":"63813","inReplyTo":"CA+=FFpNPLEYsajBZqhxhnD3-642t=qQribO+oNDF5-3hhuxDnA@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: Bug report: latest (2.50.1) x64 version of Git for Windows","fromName":"Johannes Schindelin","fromEmail":"johannes.schindelin@gmx.de","sentAt":"2025-07-22T09:47:49Z","receivedAt":"2025-07-22T09:47:53Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"johannes.schindelin@gmx.de","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/127790?v=4"},"body":"Hi James,\n\nOn Mon, 21 Jul 2025, James Gao wrote:\n\n> I just installed my system, and downloaded latest (2.50.1) x64 version\n> of Git for Windows and installed it.\n> \n> I am on Windows 11 Pro, 10.0.22631.\n> Git CLI is not getting permission to the folders.\n> For example, I cannot run git init - error: couldn't set 'HEAD'\n\nIs this the full error message?\n\n> I cannot git pull or clone or git add\n> \n> It returns me similar errors:\n> error: unable to write file\n> .git/objects/36/dd1796da4dcbb2f53005b64afeef698cfaf510: Permission\n> denied\n> error: src/helpers/schedule.ts: failed to insert into database\n> error: unable to index file 'src/helpers/schedule.ts'\n\nThis suggests that you somehow have successfully created a clone... how?\n\n> I tried running git bash as Administrator, still not working.\n\nThat is interesting, suggesting that the \"Permission denied\" error message\nis misleading and that the error is not actually due to missing write\npermissions.\n\nCan you say more about your setup?
