It's\nlikely that, as you mentioned below, the Git Credential Manager is\nactually in the system file and the one you've specified is just\ninterpreted as an additional helper.\n\n> I removed it using git config --edit --system, but after every update, it pops out again.\n\nIs it the case that it gets re-added to this file on upgrade? That\nwould explain why it keeps showing up.\n\n> I wonder if some proper fix is there for this.\n\nIdeally, you'd configure Git for Windows not to add this helper. I\nthink there's a configuration option when you install it.\n\nIf you can't or don't want to reinstall Git for Windows to reconfigure\nit, you could try setting the `credential.helper` option to an empty\nstring and then configuring the helper you want. For instance, it might\nlook like this (not valid for Windows, just an example):\n\n [credential]\n helper =\n helper = libsecret\n\nThe empty string resets the list to remove any existing helpers and then\nyou can append whatever values you want (in my case, libsecret, but\nagain, that almost certainly does not work on Windows).\n-- \nbrian m. carlson (they/them)\nToronto, Ontario, CA\n"},{"id":"521086","messageId":"PN3PR01MB9597212E1B2DA1CDE5A57909B841A@PN3PR01MB9597.INDPRD01.PROD.OUTLOOK.COM","threadId":"63723","inReplyTo":"aGQT-svTIIgXdb6X@fruit.crustytoothpaste.net","subject":"Re: Why git on windows pops up Git Credential Manager inspite of having set a credential helper in .gitconfig","fromName":"Aditya Garg","fromEmail":"gargaditya08@live.com","sentAt":"2025-07-01T17:02:01Z","receivedAt":"2025-07-01T17:02:08Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"gargaditya08@live.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/85610623?v=4"},"body":"\n \n> If you can't or don't want to reinstall Git for Windows to reconfigure\n> it, you could try setting the `credential.helper` option to an empty\n> string and then configuring the helper you want.
