I love the idea of open source and have contributed to\nseveral open source projects mostly about OS kernels.\n\nI've been using Git for years and I'm familiar with Git's porcelain\ncommands. I'd like to dive into its internals now and contribute to\nthe project directly, which I believe will help me better understand\nhow Git works and what a well-organized open source community is like.\n\nI have read this year's microprojects list and decided to go to the\n\"Fix Sign Comparison Warnings in Git's Codebase\" idea. I'd like to\nchoose `apply.c` as my target of the idea. I followed the instructions\nand found out that the `-Wsign-compare` warnings there are of\nbasically three types:\n\n 1. comparing a `length` of `size_t` type with a result of pointer\n arithmetic of `int` type\n\n 2. comparing a `length` of `size_t` type with a `length` of `int` type\n\n 3. comparing a loop count `i` of `int` type with an unsigned loop bound\n\nI think there can be three different strategies, one for each of the\nabove three types:\n\n 1. cast the result of pointer arithmetic to `size_t` type\n\n 2. try to change the type of the `length` to `size_t` (may fall back\n to Strategy 1 if the variable is not guaranteed to be unsigned)\n\n 3. use a loop count `i` of `size_t` type\n\nPlease let me know if I had anything wrong or there is any other\npoint that I should look into to do better. Any feedback or guidance\nis appreciated.\n\nBest wishes,\nZejun Zhao\n"},{"id":"511859","messageId":"Z6MXg0lzoioTew-g@pks.im","threadId":"62900","inReplyTo":"CAKfgWeZ5GSySF1N2oxoKJLnzeXOjyBh_DbhdFywXiv9L-JaRgA@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: [GSOC] Introduction and microproject selection","fromName":"Patrick Steinhardt","fromEmail":"ps@pks.im","sentAt":"2025-02-05T07:47:15Z","receivedAt":"2025-02-05T07:47:18Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"ps@pks.im","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/4056630?v=4"},"body":"On Wed, Feb 05, 2025 at 01:50:49AM +0800, Zejun Zhao wrote:\n> Hi everyone,\n> \n> I'm Zejun Zhao, currently a first-year MSc student in Computer\n> Science.
