During this\nprocess, I had the privilege of receiving guidance from dscho, who\nkindly explained how to open pull requests and share ideas in a\nrespectful and constructive manner. Following their advice, I’m\nreaching out through this email to share my project idea and verify\nwhether any similar projects exist within the community. For\nreference, here is a link to our prior conversation: Git Pull Request\n#1877 https://github.com/git/git/pull/1877\n\nThe project I am proposing is called gitpanel (a working title subject\nto change). Gitpanel is designed to provide a built-in terminal user\ninterface (TUI) for viewing and managing Git and GitHub accounts\ndirectly from the terminal. The key features include:\nProfile Overview: Displays an ASCII-styled version of the user’s\nGitHub profile picture (similar to Neofetch), along with their\nusername and email address.\n\n*Account Management* : Allows users to easily add or update their\naccount details, such as username and email.\n\n*Project Preview*: Provides quick access to a user’s GitHub projects,\nenhancing convenience for developers.\n\nThe motivation behind this project lies in its potential to simplify\naccess and usability. By running a single command (gitpanel), users\ncan:\n\n*Streamline Setup*: Guide first-time Git users on a device through\nlogging in to their GitHub account and configuring their username and\nemail.\n\n*Boost Accessibility*: Offer an intuitive TUI interface that presents\naccount information and projects in a clear, organized way, all within\na terminal environment.\n\nI think gitpanel can complement the Git ecosystem by enhancing\nusability and accessibility for users who prefer terminal-based\nworkflows.\n\nIn this email, I have addressed the questions: What does this project\naim to accomplish? and Why does it function as it does now? I would\ngreatly appreciate your feedback and insights, as well as any\ninformation on similar projects that might exist within the community.\n\nThank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to\ncollaborating further!\n\nBest regards,\ndevtracer\n(GitHub: https://github.com/devtracer)\n"},{"id":"511203","messageId":"Z5VUxwjN4GLtZHuS@tapette.crustytoothpaste.net","threadId":"62852","inReplyTo":"CADfRhQ7Gcv6SB5ZYwdE1HRxkeBwrEbYMu6KcKPRuxWdDH+gZMw@mail.gmail.com","subject":"Re: Proposal: \"GitPanel\" Project Contribution","fromName":"brian m. carlson","fromEmail":"sandals@crustytoothpaste.net","sentAt":"2025-01-25T21:16:55Z","receivedAt":"2025-01-25T21:17:03Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"sandals@crustytoothpaste.net","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/497054?v=4"},"body":"On 2025-01-25 at 19:59:17, dev oft wrote:\n> Dear Git Team,\n> \n> I am devtracer on GitHub, and I recently reached out to Git’s GitHub\n> page to contribute a project of mine to the community. The key features include:\n> Profile Overview: Displays an ASCII-styled version of the user’s\n> GitHub profile picture (similar to Neofetch), along with their\n> username and email address.\n\nI think this sounds like an interesting project, but it's probably not\nappropriate as part of the Git project.\n\nPart of the reason is that there are many different forges, of which\nGitHub is only one, and we try not to prioritize any particular forge or\nimplementation. From the project's point of view, we consider it just\nas desirable to host your own source code using a simple HTTPS or SSH\nserver, or using a self-hosted solution such as Gitolite and cgit, as it\nis to use something like GitHub, GitLab, or Codeberg.\n\nWith that in mind, a lot of the functionality that you offer here is\nquite specific to GitHub. Pull requests are not a Git feature, although\nmost forges have them under some name. Similarly, Git doesn't have the\nidea of a profile picture, or even a profile at all.\n\nSo ultimately I think many people might find your project useful, but it\nwouldn't be suitable to be within the Git project itself. As for\nsimilar projects, I believe there's tig, which provides a Git-related\nTUI (although I've never used it, and so can't speak to it much more\nthan that).\n\nA suggestion I might make if you want your project to be more generally\nuseful is to support a couple different types of forges, possibly by\ncreating some sort of reusable generic abstraction layer. For instance,\nI'm sure GitHub, GitLab, and Forgejo all have profiles, so being able to\nwork with all three would be useful, and if your software also supported\nthe on-premises versions of these forges, it might be useful as well to\npeople in large companies and universities, which often self-host for\nvarious reasons.\n\nPart of the reason I suggest that is because even though I do work for\none of the major forges (although my participation here is in my\nindividual capacity), some of the open-source software I use in my\npersonal or even work life is hosted on another forge (which I'm sure is\nalso true for many other contributors), so being able to use the same\ntooling that works for a variety of forges is helpful.\n\nBest of luck on your project!\n-- \nbrian m. carlson (they/them or he/him)\nToronto, Ontario, CA\n"},{"id":"511352","messageId":"CADfRhQ4htQ9JWa4ij6b4xQXjEC=s_+gd3_o=LA4u=gNVnyWu8g@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"62852","inReplyTo":"Z5VUxwjN4GLtZHuS@tapette.crustytoothpaste.net","subject":"Re: Proposal: \"GitPanel\" Project Contribution","fromName":"dev oft","fromEmail":"devoft1@gmail.com","sentAt":"2025-01-28T09:56:45Z","receivedAt":"2025-01-28T09:56:57Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"devoft1@gmail.com","avatar":null},"body":"Dear Brian,\n\nThank you for taking the time to review my proposal for Gitpanel and\nfor providing such thoughtful and detailed feedback. I truly\nappreciate your guidance and insights regarding the direction of my\nproject and its alignment (or lack thereof) with the goals of the Git\nproject.\n\nI now have a clearer understanding of the Git project's approach to\nmaintaining forge-neutrality, and I see how prioritizing Git-hub\nspecific features might not align with its principles. Your suggestion\nto explore support for multiple forges by developing a generic\nabstraction layer is invaluable. This would undoubtedly make the\nproject more versatile and appealing to a broader audience.\n\nI'll also take a closer look at tools to better understand existing\nsolutions and identify potential gaps that Gitpanel could address.\nYour suggestion to consider the needs of both hosted and self-hosted\nenvironments resonates with my goal of creating a widely useful and\nadaptable tool.\n\nThank you again for your encouragement and for sharing your\nperspective. I look forward to iterating on Gitpanel and exploring\nways to make it more inclusive and valuable for the larger Git\necosystem.\n\nBest regards,\ndevtracer\n\nOn Sat, Jan 25, 2025 at 4:16 PM brian m. carlson\n<sandals@crustytoothpaste.net> wrote:\n>\n> On 2025-01-25 at 19:59:17, dev oft wrote:\n> > Dear Git Team,\n> >\n> > I am devtracer on GitHub, and I recently reached out to Git’s GitHub\n> > page to contribute a project of mine to the community.
