I had enrolled in a\ntech school to get the needed training. And recently, I completed a\nsoftware engineering course that required a 70 hours weekly input.\nUpon the course completion, I stumbled on the Outreachy program,\nand I am amazed by how they have been giving the under-represented\nthe opportunity to make their first contribution in the tech space.\n\nPrior to my Outreachy application, I had made no contribution to any\nFOSS project, but I have used a ton of these softwares (Git was the\nversion control I was taught software development with) and I love\nthe spirit behind their development, \"The open source spirit: To let a\nbillion lemons go unsqueezed. To capture vanishingly less than you\ncreate. To marvel at a vast commons of software, offered with no\nstrings attached, to any who might wish to build.\" I wish to contribute,\nand I hope the Git community gives me an opportunity to.\n\n## Overview and background\n\nReferencing [1], there was a need to extend Git's home-grown unit\ntesting framework to avoid code duplication. Clar was proposed as an\nalternative to enhancing Git owned test framework with macro, since\nit would be nicer to not bother with having to enhance and maintain\nthe Git test framework.\nClar is  \"easy to test and make clear the quality of your code\".\n\n### Potential goals\n\n- consolidate the homegrown unit test framework by migrating to clar\nframework\n- implement additional assert functions for Git-specific types\n- work with clar upstream to improve shortcomings discovered during\nthe integration of Git with Clar\n\n## MicroProject\n\n[2]  t6050: avoid pipes with upstream Git commands\nStatus: will merged into master\nDescription:\nIn pipes, the exit code of a chain of commands is determined by\nthe final command. In order not to miss the exit code of a failed\nGit command, avoid pipes instead write output of Git commands\ninto a file.\nFor better debugging experience, instances of \"grep\" were changed\nto \"test_grep\". \"test_grep\" provides more context in case of  a\nfailed \"grep\".\n\n## Learning the source code\n\nI will continue to study the source code especially as it relates to the\ntask at hand, referring to previous works done by the two GSoC interns,\nwho have previously worked on this task.\n\n## Timeline\n\nPhase 1  (December 9 - December 30)\nCommunity bonding. Talk with mentors. Read Documentation.\nInvestigate the next batch of unit tests to convert.\n\nPhase 2  (December 31 - January 27)\nFigure out whether these require functionality are not yet present\nin either clar or Git's wrappers thereof.\nUpstream potentially missing features.\n\nPhase 3 (January 28 - March 7)\nMigrate tests. Send patches for review and refine them\nbased on feedback.\nIterate Phase 3\n\n## Availability\n\nI will be available to make a time commit of 30 hours weekly for the\nwhole span of the internship, 13 weeks.\n\n## Giving back to the community\n\nI already love it here, and I will always come back to make contribution\nhere, and If given the opportunity, post-Outreachy I would stay back in\nthe community helping in grooming the next set of interns in the same\nopen spirit with which I have been groomed.\n\n## Conclusion\n\nIn conclusion, I want to say a big thank you to everyone that made a\ncomment on my patch, your comment(s) had helped me to progress\nthis far in this journey. Thank you. And to every member of Git\ncommunity, thank you for sticking around and putting in the efforts,\noffering this great opportunity to any, with no strings attached, who\nmight wish to build. Thank you.\n\n## References\n\n[1] https://lore.kernel.org/git/cover.1722415748.git.ps@pks.im/\n[2] https://lore.kernel.org/git/20241022012701.8959-1-chizobajames21@gmail.com/\n"}]}
