This is being addressed by introducing a configurable locking\n timeout, similar to how we have it for both loose and packed refs.\n\n - It will bail out when it notices that its stack is out-of-date after\n having locked the \"tables.list\" file. This is addressed by reloading\n the stack as requested after locking it, which is fine because our\n transactional API would verify queued ref updates against their\n expected state after the lock was acquired anyway.\n\nSo with this patch series we can now spawn concurrent writers and they\nare expected to succeed, which is demonstrated by the test added by the\nlast patch.\n\nThanks!\n\nPatrick\n\nPatrick Steinhardt (3):\n refs/reftable: introduce \"reftable.lockTimeout\"\n reftable/stack: allow locking of outdated stacks\n refs/reftable: reload locked stack when preparing transaction\n\n Documentation/config/reftable.txt | 7 ++++\n refs/reftable-backend.c | 9 ++++-\n reftable/reftable-stack.h | 13 +++++-\n reftable/reftable-writer.h | 8 ++++\n reftable/stack.c | 38 ++++++++++++------\n t/t0610-reftable-basics.sh | 58 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++\n t/unit-tests/t-reftable-stack.c | 67 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++-\n 7 files changed, 181 insertions(+), 19 deletions(-)\n\n-- \n2.46.0.551.gc5ee8f2d1c.dirty\n\n"},{"id":"502953","messageId":"ca3eab99f7ef86d1b7a5b4d4bdb8d2b0a55566e1.1726578382.git.ps@pks.im","threadId":"62129","inReplyTo":"cover.1726578382.git.ps@pks.im","subject":"[PATCH 1/3] refs/reftable: introduce \"reftable.lockTimeout\"","fromName":"Patrick Steinhardt","fromEmail":"ps@pks.im","sentAt":"2024-09-17T13:43:20Z","receivedAt":"2024-09-17T13:43:23Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"ps@pks.im","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/4056630?v=4"},"body":"When multiple concurrent processes try to update references in a\nrepository they may try to lock the same lockfiles. This can happen even\nwhen the updates are non-conflicting and can both be applied, so it\ndoesn't always make sense to abort the transaction immediately. Both the\n\"loose\" and \"packed\" backends thus have a grace period that they wait\nfor the lock to be released that can be controlled via the config values\n\"core.filesRefLockTimeout\" and \"core.packedRefsTimeout\", respectively.\n\nThe reftable backend doesn't have such a setting yet and instead fails\nimmediately when it sees such a lock. But the exact same concepts apply\nhere as they do apply to the other backends.\n\nIntroduce a new \"reftable.lockTimeout\" config that controls how long we\nmay wait for a \"tables.list\" lock to be released. The default value of\nthis config is 100ms, which is the same default as we have it for the\n\"loose\" backend.\n\nNote that even though we also lock individual tables, this config really\nonly applies to the \"tables.list\" file. This is because individual\ntables are only ever locked when we already hold the \"tables.list\" lock\nduring compaction. When we observe such a lock we in fact do not want to\ncompact the table at all because it is already in the process of being\ncompacted by a concurrent process. So applying the same timeout here\nwould not make any sense and only delay progress.\n\nSigned-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im>\n---\n Documentation/config/reftable.txt | 7 +++++++\n refs/reftable-backend.c | 4 ++++\n reftable/reftable-writer.h | 8 ++++++++\n reftable/stack.c | 18 ++++++++++++------\n t/t0610-reftable-basics.sh | 27 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++\n 5 files changed, 58 insertions(+), 6 deletions(-)\n\ndiff --git a/Documentation/config/reftable.txt b/Documentation/config/reftable.txt\nindex 05157279778..6c9449d0232 100644\n--- a/Documentation/config/reftable.txt\n+++ b/Documentation/config/reftable.txt\n@@ -46,3 +46,10 @@ reftable.geometricFactor::\n By default, the geometric sequence uses a factor of 2, meaning that for any\n table, the next-biggest table must at least be twice as big. When we observe such a lock we in fact do not want to\ncompact the table at all because it is already in the process of being\ncompacted by a concurrent process. locked.\nThis change is safe because all verifications of the expected state\nhappen after this step anyway.\n\nAdd a testcase that verifies that many writers are now able to write to\nthe stack concurrently without failures and with a deterministic end\nresult.\n\nSigned-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im>\n---\n refs/reftable-backend.c | 3 ++-\n t/t0610-reftable-basics.sh | 31 This can happen even\nwhen the updates are non-conflicting and can both be applied, so it\ndoesn't always make sense to abort the transaction immediately. So applying the same timeout here\nwould not make any sense and only delay progress.\n\nSigned-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im>\n---\n Documentation/config/reftable.txt | 8 ++++++++\n refs/reftable-backend.c | 8 ++++++++\n reftable/reftable-writer.h | 11 +++++++++++\n reftable/stack.c | 18 ++++++++++++------\n t/t0610-reftable-basics.sh | 27 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++\n 5 files changed, 66 insertions(+), 6 deletions(-)\n\ndiff --git a/Documentation/config/reftable.txt b/Documentation/config/reftable.txt\nindex 05157279778..57087803a54 100644\n--- a/Documentation/config/reftable.txt\n+++ b/Documentation/config/reftable.txt\n@@ -46,3 +46,11 @@ reftable.geometricFactor::\n By default, the geometric sequence uses a factor of 2, meaning that for any\n table, the next-biggest table must at least be twice as big. What we really want is\nthat the stack is up-to-date after it has been locked so that we can\nverify queued updates against its current state while we know that it is\nlocked for concurrent modification.\n\nIntroduce a new flag `REFTABLE_STACK_NEW_ADDITION_RELOAD` that alters\nthe behaviour of `reftable_stack_init_addition()` in this case: when we\nnotice that it is out-of-date we reload it instead of returning an error\nto the caller.\n\nThis logic will be wired up in the reftable backend in the next commit.\n\nSigned-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im>\n---\n refs/reftable-backend.c | 4 +-\n reftable/reftable-stack.h | 13 ++++++-\n reftable/stack.c | 20 ++++++----\n t/unit-tests/t-reftable-stack.c | 67 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++-\n 4 files changed, 91 insertions(+), 13 deletions(-)\n\ndiff --git a/refs/reftable-backend.c b/refs/reftable-backend.c\nindex ca281e39a29..6ca00627dd7 100644\n--- a/refs/reftable-backend.c\n+++ b/refs/reftable-backend.c\n@@ -770,7 +770,7 @@ static int prepare_transaction_update(struct write_transaction_table_arg **out,\n \t\tif (ret)\n \t\t\treturn ret;\n \n-\t\tret = reftable_stack_new_addition(&addition, stack);\n+\t\tret = reftable_stack_new_addition(&addition, stack, 0);\n \t\tif (ret) {\n \t\t\tif (ret == REFTABLE_LOCK_ERROR)\n \t\t\t\tstrbuf_addstr(err, \"cannot lock references\");\n@@ -2207,7 +2207,7 @@ static int reftable_be_reflog_expire(struct ref_store *ref_store,\n \tif (ret < 0)\n \t\tgoto done;\n \n-\tret = reftable_stack_new_addition(&add, stack);\n+\tret = reftable_stack_new_addition(&add, stack, 0);\n \tif (ret < 0)\n \t\tgoto done;\n \ndiff --git a/reftable/reftable-stack.h b/reftable/reftable-stack.h\nindex f4f8cabc7fb..6370fe45ddf 100644\n--- a/reftable/reftable-stack.h\n+++ b/reftable/reftable-stack.h\n@@ -37,12 +37,21 @@ uint64_t reftable_stack_next_update_index(struct reftable_stack *st);\n /* holds a transaction to add tables at the top of a stack. */\n struct reftable_addition;\n \n+enum {\n+\t/*\n+\t * Reload the stack when the stack is out-of-date after locking it.\n+\t */\n+\tREFTABLE_STACK_NEW_ADDITION_RELOAD = (1 << 0),\n+};\n+\n /*\n * returns a new transaction to add reftables to the given stack. I'm wondering if something like the old \"you can't delete a\n> file somebody else has open\" restriction is biting us somehow.\n\nThanks for letting me know!\n\nI very much expect that this is the scenario that you mention, where we\ntry to delete a file that is still held open by another process. We're\ntrying to be mindful about this restriction is the reftable library by\nnot failing when a call to unlink(3P) fails for any of the tables, and\nwe do have logic in place to unlink them at a later point in time when\nnot referenced by the \"tables.list\" file. So none of the calls to unlink\nare error-checked at all.\n\nBut there's one file that we _have_ to rewrite, and that is of course\nthe \"tables.list\" file itself. We never unlink the file though but only\nrename the new instance into place. I think I recently discovered that\nwe have some problems here, because Windows seemed to allow this in some\nscenarios but not in others.\n\nIn any case, I've already set up a Windows VM last week, so I'll\ninvestigate the issue later this week.\n\nPatrick\n"},{"id":"503782","messageId":"c4lz3begoplgde5iimvk4k7cufiyryntccqo46u3fy5qvqauv3@tta5wfg2ik5t","threadId":"62129","inReplyTo":"20240927040752.GA567671@coredump.intra.peff.net","subject":"Re: [PATCH v4 3/3] refs/reftable: reload locked stack when preparing transaction","fromName":"Josh Steadmon","fromEmail":"steadmon@google.com","sentAt":"2024-09-30T22:19:04Z","receivedAt":"2024-09-30T22:19:11Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"steadmon@google.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/2654920?v=4"},"body":"On 2024.09.27 00:07, Jeff King wrote:\n> On Tue, Sep 24, 2024 at 07:33:08AM +0200, Patrick Steinhardt wrote:\n> \n> > +test_expect_success 'ref transaction: many concurrent writers' '\n> > +\ttest_when_finished \"rm -rf repo\" &&\n> > +\tgit init repo &&\n> > +\t(\n> > +\t\tcd repo &&\n> > +\t\t# Set a high timeout such that a busy CI machine will not abort\n> > +\t\t# early. 10 seconds should hopefully be ample of time to make\n> > +\t\t# this non-flaky.\n> > +\t\tgit config set reftable.lockTimeout 10000 &&\n> \n> I saw this test racily fail in the Windows CI build. Sorry for not\n> specifying earlier.\n\nI just tried doing (on 'next', since the new test is added there):\n\n make SANITIZE=address, undefined CFLAGS=-O0\n cd t\n ./t0610-reftable-basics.sh --run=1-47 --stress\n\nand got lots of failures like you describe. But in my case bumping the\ntimeout from 10s to 100s made that go away. So I think it was just the\nsanitizers making things _really_ slow and causing legit timeouts.\n\nHave you tried going beyond 2 minutes? That seems like a crazy amount of\ntime, but I guess it's possible on a really overloaded system.
