Except for some very\ngood contributors, I think it usually takes a long time for the\ncontributors we mentor to become efficient and autonomous enough by\nthemselves. Notably missing though are\n+consistency checks for the refdb. While git-fsck(1)\n+implicitly checks some of the properties of the refdb\n+because it uses its refs for a connectivity check, these\n+checks aren't sufficient to properly ensure that all refs\n+are properly consistent.\n+\n+The goal of this project would be to introduce consistency\n+checks that can be implemented by the ref backend. Initially\n+these checks may only apply to the \"files\" backend. With the\n+ongoing efforts to upstream a new \"reftable\" backend the\n+effort may be extended.\n+\n+See:\n+\n+ - https://lore.kernel.org/git/6cfee0e4-3285-4f18-91ff-d097da9de737@rd10.de/\n+ - https://lore.kernel.org/git/cover.1706601199.git.ps@pks.im/\n+\n+Expected Project Size: 175 hours or 350 hours\n+\n+Difficulty: Medium\n+\n+Languages: C, shell(bash)\n+\n+Possible mentors:\n+* Patrick Steinhardt < <ps@pks.im> >\n+* Karthik Nayak < <karthik.188@gmail.com> >\n+\n+### Refactor git-bisect(1) to make its state self-contained\n+\n+The git-bisect(1) command is used to find a commit in a\n+range of commits that introduced a specific bug. Starting a\n+bisection run creates a set of state files into the Git\n+repository which record various different parameters like\n+\".git/BISECT_START\". These files look almost like refs\n+due to their names being all-uppercase. This has led to\n+confusion with the new \"reftable\" backend because it wasn't\n+quite clear whether those files are in fact refs or not.\n+\n+As it turns out they are not refs and should never be\n+treated like one. Overall, it has been concluded that the\n+way those files are currently stored is not ideal. Instead\n+of having a proliferation of files in the Git directory, it\n+was discussed whether the bisect state should be moved into\n+its own \"bisect-state\" subdirectory. This would make it more\n+self-contained and thereby avoid future confusion. It is\n+also aligned with the sequencer state used by rebases, which\n+is neatly contained in the \"rebase-apply\" and \"rebase-merge\"\n+directories.\n+\n+The goal of this project would be to realize this change.\n+While rearchitecting the layout should be comparatively easy\n+to do, the harder part will be to hash out how to handle\n+backwards compatibility.\n+\n+See:\n+\n+ - https://lore.kernel.org/git/Za-gF_Hp_lXViGWw@tanuki/\n+\n+Expected Project Size: 175 hours or 350 hours\n+\n+Difficulty: Medium\n+\n+Languages: C, shell(bash)\n+\n+Possible mentors:\n+* Patrick Steinhardt < <ps@pks.im> >\n+* Karthik Nayak < <karthik.188@gmail.com> >\n+\n+### Implement support for reftables in \"dumb\" HTTP transport\n+\n+Fetching Git repositories uses one of two major protocols:\n+\n+ - The \"dumb\" protocol works without requiring any kind of\n+ interactive negotiation like a CGI module. It can thus\n+ be served by a static web server.\n+\n+ - The \"smart\" protocol works by having the client and\n+ server exchange multiple messages with each other. It is\n+ more efficient, but requires support for Git in the\n+ server.\n+\n+While almost all servers nowadays use the \"smart\" protocol,\n+there are still some that use the \"dumb\" protocol.\n+\n+The \"dumb\" protocol cannot serve repositories which use the\n+\"reftable\" backend though. While there exists a \"info/refs\"\n+file that is supposed to be backend-agnostic, this file does\n+not contain information about the default branch. Instead,\n+clients are expected to download the \"HEAD\" file and derive\n+the default branch like that. This file is a mere stub in\n+the \"reftable\" backend though, which breaks this protocol.\n+\n+The goal of this project is to implement \"reftable\" support\n+for \"dumb\" fetches.\n+\n+Expected Project Size: 175 hours or 350 hours\n+\n+Difficulty: Medium\n+\n+Languages: C, shell(bash)\n+\n+Possible mentors:\n+* Patrick Steinhardt < <ps@pks.im> >\n+* Karthik Nayak < <karthik.188@gmail.com> >\n-- \n2.43.GIT\n\n"},{"id":"487938","messageId":"CAP8UFD3F95TzytdpKO=LLf6Y_ejxwh9QtgAxRNKgMXW-72hjgQ@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"60807","inReplyTo":"106b8e7be9ddc2d24670b01d54347dfcf9aef196.1707122040.git.ps@pks.im","subject":"Re: [PATCH] Add ideas for GSoC 2024","fromName":"Christian Couder","fromEmail":"christian.couder@gmail.com","sentAt":"2024-02-05T16:43:17Z","receivedAt":"2024-02-05T16:43:32Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"christian.couder@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/208954?v=4"},"body":"On Mon, Feb 5, 2024 at 9:39 AM Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im> wrote:\n>\n> Add project ideas for the GSoC 2024.\n> ---\n>\n> I came up with four different topics:\n>\n> - The reftable unit test refactorings.
