We don't have any standardized documentation in the contrib tree,\nso it isn't built for git-scm.com.\n\nThe documentation we do have for 'git subtree' is at\ncontrib/subtree/git-subtree.txt.\n\nThanks,\nTaylor\n"},{"id":"467538","messageId":"221118.86edu0f2ux.gmgdl@evledraar.gmail.com","threadId":"58814","inReplyTo":"Y3fKTpufVB5oTfkD@nand.local","subject":"Re: git-subtree docs missing","fromName":"Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason","fromEmail":"avarab@gmail.com","sentAt":"2022-11-18T19:56:08Z","receivedAt":"2022-11-18T20:02:22Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"avarab@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/45301?v=4"},"body":"\nOn Fri, Nov 18 2022, Taylor Blau wrote:\n\n> On Fri, Nov 18, 2022 at 06:03:36PM +0000, David Cowden wrote:\n>> However I'm now aware that `git-subtree` is part of contrib and not\n>> officially part of git so my expectations for finding documentation\n>> there may be wrong.\n>\n> Right. We've since made\n\"scalar\" non-contrib, but when the discussion about how to do that was\nongoing I suggested creating a section in \"git(1)\" for \"Optional contrib\ncommands\"[1].\n\nThe eventual idea being that we'd always build e.g. the git-subtree\ndocs, but would not install the command by default.\n\nI can dig it up if there's interest. I really think it's much better\nthan what we're currently doing.\n\nI.e. we don't want \"git-subtree.sh\" to be \"blessed\" (for reasons outside\nof the scope of this discussion), but I don't see why that would extend\nto its docs not being accessible, and us not testing it by default as\npart of \"make test\" etc.\n\nMy first encounter with \"git-subtree\" was of finding it on one system,\nhaving a manual page for it, and then being preplexed that another\nsystem didn't have it. I then found out through other means that it was\n\"contrib\", and only optionally installed.\n\nWe'd still have it be optionally installed, but we're not doing anyone\nany favors in not linking to it as part of our docs, and having some\nblurb describing that it's shipped with git sometimes, but not part of\nthe main command set.\n\n1. https://lore.kernel.org/git/cover-v2-0.1-00000000000-20220623T100554Z-avarab@gmail.com/\n"}]}
