Which\nis not very helpful.\n\nNow, taking that thought a bit further, I did get suspicious that my patch\nstill contained a bug, and lo and behold, this bug really was there: when\nthe merge _has_ been clean so far, we report success (via exit code 0),\neven if the tree could not be written, and therefore the `git merge-tree`\ncommand should have failed!\n\nI fixed the bug in the upcoming v2 and extended the test case to verify\nthat this bug no longer exists.\n\n> If so, then this approach makes sense, and I agree with your idea to\n> use the all-zeros OID instead of the empty tree one. So I don't think\n> a non-zero exit before we have to print the resulting tree object would\n> be unexpected.\n\nThe idea of aborting the command earlier might make sense in isolation,\nand when you're familiar with Git's built-ins taking the easy `die()` way\nout upon failure without having to bother to release resources.\n\nHowever, when you keep in mind that the `merge-tree` command is far from\nits full potential and that really interesting ideas are still to be\nimplemented, some even well on their way like batched merges (see\nhttps://github.com/gitgitgadget/git/pull/1361), it starts to become a much\nbetter idea to keep the code as libified as possible, without any aborts.\nSuch an abort in the middle of the code path would interfere horribly with\nthe idea of batched merges.\n\n> But I don't have a strong feeling about it either way. However, I do think\nmerge-ort should be returning a negative value for the \"clean\" status\nin such a case. If merge-ort did that, then we wouldn't even get to\nyour new code because merge-tree.c already checks for that:\n\n merge_incore_recursive(&opt, merge_bases, parent1, parent2, &result);\n if (result.clean < 0)\n die(_(\"failure to merge\"));\n\nI have a hack above which sets a negative return value, but it's only\na workaround since it comes from a late detect-after-the-fact\nlocation. Unfortunately, the callers aren't currently prepared to\npropagate such a value upwards (as reflected in the return type of the\nfunction) so any fix in this area is a little more involved than just\nmodifying these few lines. Also, there is one other call to\nwrite_object_file() in merge-ort.c which does check and return a value\nof -1, though looking around it appears the callers of that other site\ndo not always correctly check and propagate a return value of -1\nfurther upwards as they should, meaning we are losing track of the\nfact that the merge failed to function.\n\nGiven the lack of correct propagation of -1 return values in the other\ncodepath plus the error here, keeping some form of workaround sounds\nfair (though it may be nice to print an error that something fishy\nhappened).\n\nAnd then, possibly post-v2.38.0 though we may be able to get it in\nbefore, getting correct propagation of a -1 return value from the\nsource of the error would be good. Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de>\n---\n merge-tree: fix segmentation fault in read-only repositories\n \n Turns out that the segmentation fault reported by Taylor\n [https://lore.kernel.org/git/YyopQD+LvPucnz3w@nand.local/] happened\n while testing merge-ort in a read-only repository, and that the upstream\n version of git merge-tree is as affected as GitHub's internal version.\n \n Changes since v2:\n \n * Completely changed the approach by no longer touching\n builtin/merge-tree.c but instead fixing the underlying merge-ort\n layer: we no longer ignore the return value of write_tree() and\n write_object_file().\n \n Changes since v1:\n \n * Using the SANITY prereq now\n * If the merge was aborted due to a write error, exit with a non-zero\n code even if the (potentially partial) merge is clean\n * The test case now also verifies that the git merge-tree command fails\n in a read-only repository even if the merge would have succeeded\n\nPublished-As: https://github.com/gitgitgadget/git/releases/tag/pr-1362%2Fdscho%2Fmerge-tree-in-read-only-repos-v3\nFetch-It-Via: git merge-tree: fix segmentation fault in read-only repositories\n + merge-ort: fix segmentation fault in read-only repositories\n \n - Independent of the question whether we want `git merge-tree` to report\n - the tree name even when it failed to write the tree objects in a\n - read-only repository, there is no question that we should avoid a\n - segmentation fault.\n + If the blob/tree objects cannot be written, we really need the merge\n + operations to fail, and not to continue (and then try to access the tree\n + object which is however still set to `NULL`).\n \n - And when we report an invalid tree name (because the tree could not be\n - written), we need the exit status to be non-zero.\n -\n - Let's make it so.\n + Let's stop ignoring the return value of `write_object_file()` and\n + `write_tree()` and set `clean = -1` in the error case.\n \n What if its call to\n> write_object_file() returns a value greater than 0? Is that possible?\n\nNo, `write_object_file()` returns either 0 or -1, always. I followed all\nthe code paths.\n\nHere is a tangent (feel free to skip over this lengthy analysis):\n\nThese code paths include a _very, very_ misleading one. In\n`write_loose_object()` (which is called via the call chain\n`write_object_file()` -> `write_object_file_flags()` ->\n`write_object_file_flags()`), we call `finalize_object_file()`, see\nhttps://github.com/git/git/blob/v2.37.3/object-file.c#L2030). And in that\n`finalize_object_file()` function, we set `ret = errno;` in two places\n(https://github.com/git/git/blob/v2.37.3/object-file.c#L1833 and\nhttps://github.com/git/git/blob/v2.37.3/object-file.c#L1850).\n\nWhen I read that, I chased down what the conventions are for `errno`\nvalues. Now, while\nhttps://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/007908799/xsh/errno.h.html does not\nsay anything about `errno` values being non-negative,\nhttps://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/basedefs/errno.h.html\nvery much says:\n\n\tValues for errno are now required to be distinct positive values\n\trather than non-zero values. This change is for alignment with the\n\tISO/IEC 9899:1999 standard.\n\nTerrible, right? If we set `ret = errno`, that means that we return\nsomething positive!\n\nI then even dug up the origins of the `ret = errno` statements. Turns out\nthat yours truly introduced the first of these `ret = errno` statements in\n9e48b389990 (Work around missing hard links on FAT formatted media,\n2005-10-26).\n\nSo why did I do such a thing? Well, back then, the `ret` value _already_\ncontained an `errno`, thanks to calling `link_temp_to_file()`, which _did_\nreturn an `errno`. In fact, there was no code path in\n`move_temp_to_file()` (as the function was called back then) that would\nreturn -1, it always returned either 0 or an `errno`.\n\nAnd after coming so far, after one hour of analyzing, I finally, finally\nrealized that there is no `return ret;` in that function. That function\nhas a `ret` variable that is never returned _from_ that function, but it\nused to be returned _to_ that function, by the `link_temp_to_file()`\nfunction that does not even exist any longer.\n\nIn my defense, this terribly misleading code was not even introduced by\nmyself. It was introduced in 230f13225df (Create object subdirectories on\ndemand, 2005-10-08).\n\ntl;dr all is good, `finalize_object_file()` returns 0 upon success, -1\nupon failure.\n\n> If it is, are those error cases or not? About half the callers in the\n> code base that check the return value of write_object_file() check for a\n> non-zero value, the other half check for a value less than 0.\n\nAnd then there is `apply.c` where the return value isn't even checked at\nall most of the time.\n\n> And I can't find any documentation. And this can fail, too, but we\nignore that write failure so far.\n\nSince we will always write out a new tree object in addition to the blob\n(and if the blob did not exist in the database yet, we can be certain\nthat the tree object did not exist yet), the merge will _still_ fail at\nthat point, but it does unnecessary work by continuing after the blob\ncould not be written.\n\nLet's pay close attention and error out early if the blob could not be\nwritten. This reduces the error output of t4301.25 (\"merge-ort fails\ngracefully in a read-only repository\") from:\n\n\terror: insufficient permission for adding an object to repository database ./objects\n\terror: error: Unable to add numbers to database\n\terror: insufficient permission for adding an object to repository database ./objects\n\terror: error: Unable to add greeting to database\n\terror: insufficient permission for adding an object to repository database ./objects\n\tfatal: failure to merge\n\nto:\n\n\terror: insufficient permission for adding an object to repository database ./objects\n\terror: error: Unable to add numbers to database\n\tfatal: failure to merge\n\nNote: This patch adjusts two variable declarations from `unsigned` to\n`int` because their purpose is to hold the return value of\n`handle_content_merge()`, which is of type `int`. The existing users of\nthose variables are only interested whether that variable is zero or\nnon-zero, therefore this type change does not affect the existing code.\n\nSigned-off-by: Johannes I've had a number of users come to\nme with \"messed up git repositories\" where I eventually discover that\nusers just randomly add \"sudo\" to some of their commands because when\nthings don't work, sometimes \"sudo\" fixes it. That means they've\ncreated stuff in their .git directory which may be owned by root,\nperhaps even some of the .git/objects/XX directories. However, they\nmay have other .git/objects/XX directories owned by their normal user.\n\nIf just some .git/objects/XX directories are owned by root and not\nothers, then it may be when users run git commands as themselves that\nsome things can be written to the object database but not others. In\nparticular, it could be that writing blob objects fail, but writing a\ntree object which references those blobs succeeds.\n\n> Let's pay close attention and error out early if the blob could not be\n> written. version\nof git merge-tree is as affected as GitHub's internal version.\n\nChanges since v4:\n\n * Corrected the commit message that claimed that the second patch was not\n fixing a real bug but just avoided unnecessary work. As pointed out by\n Elijah, there are scenarios where this second patch fixes a very real\n bug.\n * Added Elijah's \"Reviewed-by\" footer.\n\nChanges since v3:\n\n * I now consistently use the pattern int ret = 0; ... if (...) ret = -1.\n * I added a commit to properly propagate write failures through the\n handle_content_merge() call path, even if it is not really critical (it\n just fails sooner, but the merge would have failed just the same without\n this patch).\n\nChanges since v2:\n\n * Completely changed the approach by no longer touching\n builtin/merge-tree.c but instead fixing the underlying merge-ort layer:\n we no longer ignore the return value of write_tree() and\n write_object_file().\n\nChanges since v1:\n\n * Using the SANITY prereq now\n * If the merge was aborted due to a write error, exit with a non-zero code\n even if the (potentially partial) merge is clean\n * The test case now also verifies that the git merge-tree command fails in\n a read-only repository even if the merge would have succeeded\n\nJohannes Schindelin (2):\n merge-ort: fix segmentation fault in read-only repositories\n merge-ort: return early when failing to write a blob\n\n merge-ort.c | 94 ++++++++++++++++++++------------\n t/t4301-merge-tree-write-tree.sh | 9 +++\n 2 files changed, 69 insertions(+), 34 deletions(-)\n\n\nbase-commit: dda7228a83e2e9ff584bf6adbf55910565b41e14\nPublished-As: https://github.com/gitgitgadget/git/releases/tag/pr-1362%2Fdscho%2Fmerge-tree-in-read-only-repos-v5\nFetch-It-Via: git fetch https://github.com/gitgitgadget/git pr-1362/dscho/merge-tree-in-read-only-repos-v5\nPull-Request: https://github.com/gitgitgadget/git/pull/1362\n\nRange-diff vs v4:\n\n 1: ab6df092eba ! 1: 63be9f9f717 merge-ort: fix segmentation fault in read-only repositories\n @@ Commit message\n Let's stop ignoring the return value of `write_object_file()` and\n `write_tree()` and set `clean = -1` in the error case.\n \n + Reviewed-by: Elijah Newren <newren@gmail.com>\n Signed-off-by: Johannes Schindelin <johannes.schindelin@gmx.de>\n \n ## merge-ort.c ##\n 2: 087207ae0b0 ! 2: bfc71a2d8ad merge-ort: return early when failing to write a blob\n @@ Commit message\n that already exists in the database).
