As\na consequence, \"git branch --sort=bogus -h\" used to fail to give the\nbrief help, which arguably may have been a feature, now does so,\nwhich is more consistent with how other options work.\n\nThe patch is smaller than the actual extent of the \"damage\" to the\ncodebase, thanks to the fact that the original code consistently\nused OPT_REF_SORT() macro to handle command line options. We only\nneeded to replace the variable used for the list, and implementation\nof the callback function used in the macro.\n\nThe old rule was for the users of the API to:\n\n - Declare ref_sorting and ref_sorting_tail variables;\n\n - OPT_REF_SORT() macro will instantiate ref_sorting instance (which\n may barf and die) and append it to the tail;\n\n - Append to the tail each ref_sorting read from the configuration\n by parsing in the config callback (which may barf and die);\n\n - See if ref_sorting is null and use ref_sorting_default() instead.\n\nNow the rule is not all that different but is simpler:\n\n - Declare ref_sorting_options string list.\n\n - OPT_REF_SORT() macro will append it to the string list;\n\n - Append to the string list the sort key read from the\n configuration;\n\n - call ref_sorting_options() to turn the string list to ref_sorting\n structure (which also deals with the default value).\n\nAs side effects, this change also cleans up a few issues:\n\n - 95be717c (parse_opt_ref_sorting: always use with NONEG flag,\n 2019-03-20) muses that \"git for-each-ref --no-sort\" should simply\n clear the sort keys accumulated so far; it now does.\n\n - The implementation detail of \"struct ref_sorting\" and the helper\n function parse_ref_sorting() can now be private to the ref-filter\n API implementation.\n\n - If you set branch.sort to a bogus value, the any \"git branch\"\n invocation, not only the listing mode, would abort with the\n original code; now it doesn't\n\nSigned-off-by: Junio C Hamano So this\nmakes sense (and calling UNLEAK() before the pointer is set is perfectly\nfine, since it takes the address of the auto variable). It is a shame\nyou can't just ref_sorting_free() afterwards, but we don't have that\nfunction yet. And adding it is way out of scope here. :)\n\nI do find it interesting that this case checks sorting_options.nr\nitself, rather than relying on ref_sorting_options() to give us the\ndefault. But that's because the existing code avoids sorting at all in\nthat case, so this is staying faithful to the original.\n\n> -int parse_opt_ref_sorting(const struct option *opt, const char *arg, int unset)\n> +struct ref_sorting *ref_sorting_options(struct string_list *options)\n> {\n> +\tstruct string_list_item *item;\n> +\tstruct ref_sorting *sorting = NULL, **tail = &sorting;\n> +\n> +\tif (!options->nr) {\n> +\t\tsorting = ref_default_sorting();\n> +\t} else {\n> +\t\tfor_each_string_list_item(item, options)\n> +\t\t\tparse_ref_sorting(tail, item->string);\n> +\t}\n> +\n> \t/*\n> -\t * NEEDSWORK: We should probably clear the list in this case, but we've\n> -\t * already munged the global used_atoms list, which would need to be\n> -\t * undone.\n> +\t * From here on, the ref_sorting list should be used to talk\n> +\t * about the sort order used for the output. A few idle thoughts:\n\n - I'd probably have kept the word \"parse\" somewhere in the name, since\n it really is turning the user-provided text into our internal form\n\n - using a string_list is probably reasonable. We don't care about the\n util field here. Taking a \"const char **\" with NULL-termination or a\n number would be more general (and the callers could use a strvec to\n collect it). But I doubt any of the callers would ever be care about\n the distinction.\n\n - clearing the list at the end feels a little funny to me, just\n because this is conceptually a read-only operation (parse the user's\n text into our internal format). Your comment tells me what you're\n trying to protect against, but I find it unlikely anybody would\n mis-use the string_list afterwards (it doesn't do anything itself\n unless you parse it into the ref_sorting struct).\n\n All of the current callers are happy with this (and it even saves\n them clearing it themselves), but it just feels like an unusual\n interface.\n\n> -struct ref_sorting {\n> -\tstruct ref_sorting *next;\n> -\tint atom; /* index into used_atom array (internal) */\n> -\tenum {\n> -\t\tREF_SORTING_REVERSE = 1<<0,\n> -\t\tREF_SORTING_ICASE = 1<<1,\n> -\t\tREF_SORTING_VERSION = 1<<2,\n> -\t\tREF_SORTING_DETACHED_HEAD_FIRST = 1<<3,\n> -\t} sort_flags;\n> +enum ref_sorting_order {\n> +\tREF_SORTING_REVERSE = 1<<0,\n> +\tREF_SORTING_ICASE = 1<<1,\n> +\tREF_SORTING_VERSION = 1<<2,\n> +\tREF_SORTING_DETACHED_HEAD_FIRST = 1<<3,\n> };\n\nOK, so we have to leave this order enum public because some of the\ncallers use it with ref_sorting_set_sort_flags_all(). PATCH v2 3/4] for-each-ref: delay parsing of --sort=<atom> options","fromName":"Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason","fromEmail":"avarab@gmail.com","sentAt":"2021-10-20T13:24:35Z","receivedAt":"2021-10-20T13:24:50Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"avarab@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/45301?v=4"},"body":"From: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>\n\nThe for-each-ref family of commands invoke parsers immediately when\nit sees each --sort=<atom> option, and die before even seeing the\nother options on the command line when the <atom> is unrecognised.\n\nInstead, accumulate them in a string list, and have them parsed into\na ref_sorting structure after the command line parsing is done. We only\nneeded to replace the variable used for the list, and implementation\nof the callback function used in the macro.\n\nThe old rule was for the users of the API to:\n\n - Declare ref_sorting and ref_sorting_tail variables;\n\n - OPT_REF_SORT() macro will instantiate ref_sorting instance (which\n may barf and die) and append it to the tail;\n\n - Append to the tail each ref_sorting read from the configuration\n by parsing in the config callback (which may barf and die);\n\n - See if ref_sorting is null and use ref_sorting_default() instead.\n\nNow the rule is not all that different but is simpler:\n\n - Declare ref_sorting_options string list.\n\n - OPT_REF_SORT() macro will append it to the string list;\n\n - Append to the string list the sort key read from the\n configuration;\n\n - call ref_sorting_options() to turn the string list to ref_sorting\n structure (which also deals with the default value).\n\nAs side effects, this change also cleans up a few issues:\n\n - 95be717c (parse_opt_ref_sorting: always use with NONEG flag,\n 2019-03-20) muses that \"git for-each-ref --no-sort\" should simply\n clear the sort keys accumulated so far; it now does.\n\n - The implementation detail of \"struct ref_sorting\" and the helper\n function parse_ref_sorting() can now be private to the ref-filter\n API implementation.\n\n - If you set branch.sort to a bogus value, the any \"git branch\"\n invocation, not only the listing mode, would abort with the\n original code; now it doesn't\n\nSigned-off-by: Junio C Hamano The feature lets you defeat the configured personal\ndefault, if I understand the code right, which is probably a good\nthing.\n\nI think that the command line option is cumulative on top of\nconfigured values, with or without this change, and I think that\nqualifies as a bug to be fixed. E.g. with a command line option\n\n $ git -c branch.sort=-committerdate branch --sort=subject\n\nany configured sort keys should be cleared and the branches ought to\nbe sorted solely on their subject string, but I think the code with\nor without the patch still uses the \"-committerdate\" as a secondary\nkey to tiebreak sorting by \"subject\".\n\nUntil that bug is fixed, using --no-sort as the first command line\noption before the true --sort=<key> option(s) you want to use would\nbe a workaround.\n\nHowever, it is tricky to arrange, as the command already takes\nmultiple --sort keys, and the laster ones are taken as more\nsignificant sort order, so it is tricky to come up with two keys A\nand B such that --sort=A --no-sort --sort=B will produce one order,\nwhile --sort=A --sort=B will produce another different order.\n\n>> +\tif (sorting_options.nr) {\n>> +\t\tstruct ref_sorting *sorting;\n>> +\t\tUNLEAK(sorting);\n>> +\n>> +\t\tsorting = ref_sorting_options(&sorting_options);\n>> \t\tref_array_sort(sorting, &ref_array);\n>> +\t}\n>\n> I wondered at first about pulling this UNLEAK() down, but it's because\n> you move the \"sorting\" variable itself into the smaller scope. a ref_sorting_release() in branch.c to free the memory from the\nref_sorting_options(). This plugs the final in-tree memory leak of\nthat API.\n\nIn the preceding commit the \"sorting\" variable was left in the\ncmd_branch() scope, even though that wasn't needed anymore. Move it to\nthe \"else if (list)\" scope instead. We can also move the \"struct\nstring_list\" only used for that branch to be declared in that block\n\nThat \"struct ref_sorting\" does not need to be \"static\" (and isn't\nre-used). The \"ref_sorting_options()\" will return a valid one, we\ndon't need to make it \"static\" to have it zero'd out. That it was\nstatic was another artifact of the pre-image of the preceding commit.\n\nSigned-off-by: Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason <avarab@gmail.com>\n---\n builtin/branch.c | 8 +++++---\n 1 file changed, 5 insertions(+), 3 deletions(-)\n\ndiff --git a/builtin/branch.c b/builtin/branch.c\nindex 0b7ed82654a..7a1d1eeb070 100644\n--- a/builtin/branch.c\n+++ b/builtin/branch.c\n@@ -407,7 +407,8 @@ static char *build_format(struct ref_filter *filter, int maxwidth, const char *r\n \treturn strbuf_detach(&fmt, NULL);\n }\n \n-static void print_ref_list(struct ref_filter *filter, struct ref_sorting *sorting, struct ref_format *format)\n+static void print_ref_list(struct ref_filter *filter, struct ref_sorting *sorting,\n+\t\t\t struct ref_format *format, struct string_list *output)\n {\n \tint i;\n \tstruct ref_array array;\n@@ -449,7 +450,7 @@ static void print_ref_list(struct ref_filter *filter, struct ref_sorting *sortin\n \t\tif (column_active(colopts)) {\n \t\t\tassert(!filter->verbose && \"--column and --verbose are incompatible\");\n \t\t\t /* format to a string_list to let print_columns() do its job */\n-\t\t\tstring_list_append(&output, out.buf);\n+\t\t\tstring_list_append(output, out.buf);\n \t\t} else {\n \t\t\tfwrite(out.buf, 1, out.len, stdout);\n \t\t\tputchar('\\n');\n@@ -753,9 +754,10 @@ int cmd_branch(int argc, const char **argv, const char *prefix)\n \t\tref_sorting_set_sort_flags_all(sorting, REF_SORTING_ICASE, icase);\n \t\tref_sorting_set_sort_flags_all(\n \t\t\tsorting, REF_SORTING_DETACHED_HEAD_FIRST, 1);\n-\t\tprint_ref_list(&filter, sorting, &format);\n+\t\tprint_ref_list(&filter, sorting, &format, &output);\n \t\tprint_columns(&output, colopts, NULL);\n \t\tstring_list_clear(&output, 0);\n+\t\tref_sorting_release(sorting);\n \t\treturn 0;\n \t} else if (edit_description) {\n \t\tconst char *branch_name;\n-- \n2.33.1.1338.g20da966911a\n\n"},{"id":"439140","messageId":"YXCAuAwZenM6EPug@coredump.intra.peff.net","threadId":"56733","inReplyTo":"xmqq4k9bssr7.fsf@gitster.g","subject":"Re: [PATCH] for-each-ref: delay parsing of --sort=<atom> options","fromName":"Jeff King","fromEmail":"peff@peff.net","sentAt":"2021-10-20T20:48:56Z","receivedAt":"2021-10-20T20:49:08Z","isPatch":true,"sender":{"key":"peff@peff.net","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/45925?v=4"},"body":"On Wed, Oct 20, 2021 at 06:58:04AM -0700, Junio C Hamano wrote:\n\n> However, it is tricky to arrange, as the command already takes\n> multiple --sort keys, and the laster ones are taken as more\n> significant sort order, so it is tricky to come up with two keys A\n> and B such that --sort=A --no-sort --sort=B will produce one order,\n> while --sort=A --sort=B will produce another different order.\n\nYeah, I faced something similar with 7c5045fc18 (ref-filter: apply\nfallback refname sort only after all user sorts, 2020-05-03).
