I was tempted to also send\nout my series that [converts the rest of submodule update] to C, but it is quite a\nbig series, and it doesn't help that we are already at the release week for Git.\nI felt I should be a little more patient, and wait for `run-update-procedure` to\nget picked up first rather than send a storm of all these related series at\nonce, at a time of release rush.\n\nIn other news, my attempt to making `submodule` a fully C builtin is shaping up\nwell. Here's a brief of how the transition will work:\n\n- We have a switch called `submodule.useBuiltin` (as well as\n  `GIT_TEST_SUBMODULE_USE_BUILTIN` as an environment variable for the test\n  suite) which defaults to false. When set to true, we use the builtins that are\n  purely in C.\n\n- If the switch is set to true, but the user requests a command that has not been\n  converted yet, it falls back to using the old shell starting point. This\n  allows us to test the newly ported builtins with the switch set to true, while\n  still passing the test suite as a whole.\n\nI expect this transition to be rather brief, because the commands are already\nimplemented, all we need to do is manage the flag parsing. As of now [I have\nalready ported the `submodule status` command] to a pure C builtin. I am open to\ntaking comments on this approach, feel free to leave them on the GitHub web\ninterface, or on the list.\n\n------------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nHave a great weekend!\n\n---\nAtharva Raykar\nಅಥರ್ವ ರಾಯ್ಕರ್\nअथर्व रायकर\n\n\n[run-update-procedure] <https://lore.kernel.org/git/20210813075653.56817-1-raykar.ath@gmail.com/>\n\n[converts the rest of submodule update] <https://github.com/tfidfwastaken/git/tree/submodule-update-list-1>\n\n[I have\nalready ported the `submodule status` command] <https://github.com/tfidfwastaken/git/commits/submodule-make-builtin-2>\n"},{"id":"432729","messageId":"CAP8UFD2f1XLwzBn1oxX7MgWBvu1ypYZiryDcMhG=W4KVTmqCjw@mail.gmail.com","threadId":"56276","inReplyTo":"m2im09a4dl.fsf@gmail.com","subject":"Re: [GSoC] My Git Dev Blog - Week 13","fromName":"Christian Couder","fromEmail":"christian.couder@gmail.com","sentAt":"2021-08-14T07:09:58Z","receivedAt":"2021-08-14T07:10:13Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"christian.couder@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/208954?v=4"},"body":"On Fri, Aug 13, 2021 at 2:58 PM Atharva Raykar <raykar.ath@gmail.com> wrote:\n>\n> Here's the link to the blog: <https://atharvaraykar.me/gitnotes/week13>\n\nGreat, thanks!\n"}]}
