I just use a straightforward {\n>   editor + MUA + git } stack and go with the flow!\n\nI'm a small-time contributor, but I do read the mailing list regularly.\n\nAs such, I'm not subscribed to the list; I read it on lore.kernel.org\nor public-inbox.org (nicer colors!). The UI of public-inbox is very clear\nwith respect to threading, and the front page also lists messages in\na way that it is easy to quickly see what's new.\n\nWhen I want to reply to a message that I read on the list, I import it\ninto a \"Git mailing list\" IMAP folder in my Gmail account so that I can answer\nusing my mail client (Thunderbird for now since Apple Mail has been reliably\ncrashing at launch for the last months) and quote relevant parts of the message.\n\nTo import a thread from the mailing list I use a combination of the excellent\n'b4' tool, developed by the kernel community [1], and 'git imap-send'. It's\nbasically this:\n\n$ git config --get alias.ml-imap\n!f() { b4 mbox -o- $1 | git imap-send; }; f\n\nThis sometimes does not work if some messages in the thread were not created\nusing  'git format-patch', since 'git imap-send' expects the \"From\", \"Date\"\nand \"Subject\" headers in a certain order. So I created a small Python script,\n'git in', for this case [2].\n\nFor small and simple reviews, I also simply import the patches into Thunderbird\nand reply inline. If I want to do a more in-depth review and browse the code as\nmodified by a series, I fetch the contributor's branch and take a look locally.\nMore often than not though people do not provide a 'git fetch'-ready link in their\ncover letter. So in that case I use 'b4 am' [1] to fetch the latest version of a series\nand apply it locally. Before 'b4' was created I used 'git pw' [3], a command line\nclient for Patchwork, and the Git patchwork instance at [4], but these days I prefer\n'b4' as it's more closely integrated with public-inbox.\n\nFor my own contribution I use Gitgitgdaget [5], it handles almost everything needed\nfor git.git contributions:  keeping track of the CC list for\nme, updating the re-roll count,  adding the In-Reply-To header such that subsequent\nversions of the series are sent as a response to the cover letter of the previous version,\ngenerating a range-diff against the previous version, providing a 'git fetch'-ready tag,\ncommenting on the PR when the series is mentioned in Junio's \"What's cooking\", etc.\n\nSome things it does not support are: sending a patch as a response to some random\nmail on the list, which is sometimes useful, reading the commit notes to generate\nin-patch commentaries [6], customizing the diff generated by 'format-patch'.\nOther things are listed at [7].\n\nRecently I've also been using only the terminal with Gitgitgadget:\nI use 'git branch --edit-description' to write my cover letter,\nand then use the 'gh' GitHub CLI [8] to open my PR:\n\n$ git config --get-regexp alias.desc*\nalias.desc-title !git config branch.$(git branch --show-current).description | head -1\nalias.desc-body !git config branch.$(git branch --show-current).description | tail -n+3\n$ gh pr create --title \"$(git desc-title)\" --body \"$(git desc-body)\" --head phil-blain:$(git branch --show-current)\n\nI hope this provides a different perspective!\n\nCheers,\nPhilippe.\n\n\n[1] https://pypi.org/project/b4/\n[2] https://gist.github.com/phil-blain/d350e91959efa6e7afce60e74bf7e4a8\n[3] https://patchwork.readthedocs.io/projects/git-pw/en/latest/usage/\n[4] https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/git/list/\n[5] https://gitgitgadget.github.io/\n[6] https://github.com/gitgitgadget/gitgitgadget/issues/173\n[7] https://github.com/gitgitgadget/gitgitgadget/issues\n[8] https://cli.github.com/\n"},{"id":"431647","messageId":"m2pmuxy77j.fsf@gmail.com","threadId":"56158","inReplyTo":"ee679a57-0851-962d-a63a-6a0bdba35b2e@gmail.com","subject":"Re: [GSoC] A small survey + My Git Blog, week 10","fromName":"Atharva Raykar","fromEmail":"raykar.ath@gmail.com","sentAt":"2021-08-01T07:06:40Z","receivedAt":"2021-08-01T07:08:30Z","isPatch":false,"sender":{"key":"raykar.ath@gmail.com","avatar":"https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/24277692?v=4"},"body":"\nPhilippe Blain <levraiphilippeblain@gmail.com> writes:\n\n> Hi Atharva,\n>\n> Le 2021-07-25 à 08:22, Atharva Raykar a écrit :\n>> Hello all,\n>> Week 10 of my Git blog can be found here:\n>> https://atharvaraykar.me/gitnotes/week10\n>> As for the \"survey part\", jump to the section here:\n>> https://atharvaraykar.me/gitnotes/week10#the-mailing-list-developer-workflow\n>> ...feel free to reply in this thread.\n>>\n>\n> Quoting your \"survey\" questions:\n>\n>> What tools, systems and workflows do you find valuable in your\n>> day-to-day work? Before 'b4' was created I used 'git pw' \n> [3], a command line\n> client for Patchwork, and the Git patchwork instance at [4], but \n> these days I prefer\n> 'b4' as it's more closely integrated with public-inbox.\n>\n> For my own contribution I use Gitgitgdaget [5], it handles \n> almost everything needed\n> for git.git contributions:  keeping track of the CC list for\n> me, updating the re-roll count,  adding the In-Reply-To header \n> such that subsequent\n> versions of the series are sent as a response to the cover \n> letter of the previous version,\n> generating a range-diff against the previous version, providing \n> a 'git fetch'-ready tag,\n> commenting on the PR when the series is mentioned in Junio's \n> \"What's cooking\", etc.\n>\n> Some things it does not support are: sending a patch as a \n> response to some random\n> mail on the list, which is sometimes useful, reading the commit \n> notes to generate\n> in-patch commentaries [6], customizing the diff generated by \n> 'format-patch'.\n> Other things are listed at [7].\n>\n> Recently I've also been using only the terminal with \n> Gitgitgadget:\n> I use 'git branch --edit-description' to write my cover letter,\n> and then use the 'gh' GitHub CLI [8] to open my PR:\n>\n> $ git config --get-regexp alias.desc*\n> alias.desc-title !git config branch.$(git branch \n> --show-current).description | head -1\n> alias.desc-body !git config branch.$(git branch \n> --show-current).description | tail -n+3\n> $ gh pr create --title \"$(git desc-title)\" --body \"$(git \n> desc-body)\" --head phil-blain:$(git branch --show-current)\n>\n> I hope this provides a different perspective!\n\nThanks for the detailed reply!\n\nI like that it covers a lot about how you retrieve patches and \nrespond\nto reviews.\n\nYou have convinced me to give Gitgitgadget a try for my next patch \n:^)\n\n> Cheers,\n> Philippe.\n>\n>\n> [1] https://pypi.org/project/b4/\n> [2] \n> https://gist.github.com/phil-blain/d350e91959efa6e7afce60e74bf7e4a8\n> [3] \n> https://patchwork.readthedocs.io/projects/git-pw/en/latest/usage/\n> [4] https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/git/list/\n> [5] https://gitgitgadget.github.io/\n> [6] https://github.com/gitgitgadget/gitgitgadget/issues/173\n> [7] https://github.com/gitgitgadget/gitgitgadget/issues\n> [8] https://cli.github.com/\n"}]}
